Pop Art Superheroes and Characters

Pop Art takes images from everyday culture and elevates it to fine art. Some of the original pop artist, such as Roy Lichenstein, were influenced by comics. Lichenstein made large paintings that looked similar to comic book panels. For this project, students made a newspaper collage background with paper-mache on a piece of sturdy cardboard. Newspaper have been a stable of popular culture for many years, although they may soon be obsolete with the push towards digital. Students chose a superhero or anime character to draw and then paint on top of the newspaper collage. We used a grid to help practice drawing skills rather than tracing. Lastly, students came up with a word or phrase that connected to their character. They used newspaper letters that they cut out and glued onto their boards. They aslo wrote artist statements explaining why they chose their character and the significance of their word or prhase.
