At Sheffield Hallam University, our sports clubs are inclusive and welcoming communities open to all students. We celebrate diversity and ensure that everyone—regardless of ability, background, disability, gender identity, age, or experience—has the opportunity to get involved, feel supported, and thrive through sport and physical activity.
On this page you will find guidance on how best to support any students wishing to join your team who have a disability. The Sheffield Hallam University Disability Support team website can be found below who are the experts in this area.
At Sport Hallam we would encourage committee members to sign-post and follow the steps below:
Initial Contact - A student with a disability expresses an interest in joining your club.
Escalation - Committee share the Club Sport Team contact details (ClubSport@shu.ac.uk) with the student. Alternatively, please take the student's details (name, student ID, university email address and information regarding their disability) and share with the Club Sport Team.
Meeting - Staff will meet with the student to understand how we can best support the student to participate in Club Sport activity and identify any suitable adjustments whilst working in partnership with Disabled Student Support team (below) and the relevant National Governing Body representatives.
Committee members should not make a decision regarding a student's participation in their sport independently. If you are unsure on how best to support a student, please seek advice from the Club Sport Team.
Outcome - Student and Club will be informed of the outcome of the meeting.
