BASH RAHMAT

  1. Monotheism: the belief of one god in Islam

  2. Congregation: the coming together as one to pray

  3. Unity: Islam is a religion of equality regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, etc.

INTRODUCTION | SHELL

Biomimicry. Using the nature as inspiration to create a serene, comfortable, relaxing and spiritual praying space. The Shell stood out to me the most in my research of biomimicry design. People views shells as a materialistic possession while for a snail its a necessity, a private abode to reflect on oneself and protection from the elements. A mosque is meant to serve the same purpose for all but in recent, many modern mosques have strayed from this original intent. Women are neglected in regard to space, amenities, comfort, and overall user experience in most mosques. Moreover, some mosques are exclusive to certain sects of Islam or certain races, ethnicities, etc. My goal is to unite the Muslim community as one by turning back to the roots of Islam and mosques. Using a shell as inspiration in texture, volumetrics, privacy, patterns, light quality, etc.

CONCEPT | SHELL

Using the nature of shells to create unite the Muslim community as one. These 2 characteristics are were crucial in the design development in distinguishing the "outside" of the shell (lobby) and the inside (interior spaces).

  1. Texture: when you are inside a shell the outside is a hard, sharp and protective layer while the inside is a smooth and glossy.

  2. Light: light emphasizes the hard sharp texture on the outside while light acts a guiding element from the the inside of a shell.

LOGO | WAHID

The first letter encloses the rest of the letters which are more organic and like a shell has sharp hard angles outside and soft on the inside

PRAYER WALL

PRAYER WALL | INFINITY MIRROR

The prayer wall is a composition of an under-lit etched glass between one-way and two way acrylic mirrors. This results in an "Infinity" affect, where the etched calligraphy seemingly repeats forever.

This gives the Qibla wall;

  1. Focal Point: A sense of directionality (direction of prayer) + wall of light.

  2. Divinity : seemingly infinite depth + 99 names of Allah.

  3. Organic nature: the calligraphy moves as you move.
