RE / NU WELLNESS
The RE / NU Wellness Centre brings like-minded individuals together in a space that invites users to heal, connect and grow through a sensory interior experience.
By merging a gym, cafe, and spa space, individuals can use these spaces conveniently in cohesion as third places for self-improvement and leave feeling renewed.
PERSONAL CONNECTION
My thesis direction stems from my love of fitness and self-care.
I passionately believe that the health of our bodies and minds plays an essential role in how we perceive the world around us. As covid has impacted all of us in recent years, this holds true now more than ever. During my thesis development, I researched extensively and learned how covid has affected us all mentally and physically. I found an overwhelming response to a significant rise in mental health issues over the duration of the past few years. As services shut down that once acted as a third place for individuals to retreat to, such as gyms, spas, and coffee shops, there was a significant impact on citizens' overall well-being and sense of self. I have always been interested heavily in fitness and self-care, so I wanted to transition that interest into my thesis project, hoping to inspire individuals after a period where mental and physical wellness may have been neglected.
CONCEPT
To involve all of the human senses and create a sensory experience that will allow users to feel more immersed in the interior space, allowing a mind and body renewal to come easier to individuals through thoughtful interior design considerations.

SECOND FLOOR FURNITURE PLAN
The second floor level operates from a public, communication-focused setting into a more private spa setting. Massage, facial, laser, and wax services can be located around the perimeter of the space with natural sunlight allowing users to feel grounded and calm. The zen garden and bench seating area in the middle of the spa space invites users to take moments to reflect and be in the moment. The Mani/Pedi lounge is centred along the back wall and close to the zen garden as it is a more public space that promotes interaction and conversation. The employee lounge is accessed from the spa area, including an entry into the shared laundry space with the cafe back of house. Change rooms can be accessed in the private space of this floor for spa users. The separate women's and men's change rooms are equipped with saunas, showers, change room stalls, and water closet stalls.

MAIN FLOOR REFLECTED CEILING PLAN
The lighting design intent on the main floor is to create visual interest within the spaces by immersing users with various dropped ceilings and fascinating volumetric materiality and light fixtures throughout to ensure that individuals are connected and visually interested in the interior.
The reception area has ambient lighting with visually interesting pendants. There are many sconces on the wall to create a wall-washing ambiance to the space. Strip LED lighting illuminates many of the dropped ceiling features on the main floor. The main workout area at the back of the space has ambient flush mount lighting where the machines are located, with wall washing sconces along the bench area and LED strip lighting to line the dropped ceiling edge and gym mirror to create silhouettes of these features. The group training and personal training rooms feature pot lights, which can also be found throughout the entire main floor.
SECOND FLOOR REFLECTED CEILING PLAN
The second floor lighting plan is designed to create a relaxing atmosphere that does not provide the user with overstimulation from the brightness of the space. The natural sunlight from the windows is a design focus in the upstairs space that offers a relaxed and grounding atmosphere to the users.
Unique pendants can be found in the reception and cafe spaces, becoming a focal point to the eye and drawing the user further into the area. Soft ambient lighting can be seen with the sconces, with more direct downward lit task lighting above the cafe tables. There are mobile overhead lights in the spa services spaces that employees may move around the room to best suit the service lighting needs. Decorative ambient sconces can be seen in all service rooms to add interest to the millwork. In the zen garden, visually interesting pendant lighting can be seen amongst nature to subtly showcase the elements within the space. The Mani and Pedi Lounge has pendant lights that aid in service proficiency and add to the visual interest of the space. Potlights can be seen throughout the second floor to create an even lighting scheme throughout.
