My idea for this project is based on my experience and background growing up around and playing the violin. I began playing the violin at the age of five, inspired by seeing my Gido, Harry Krawchuk play. I progressed in my learning through lessons and attending the Alberta Society of Fiddler's summer camps. I will always have a connection to the violin thanks to my Gido and family who put me through it all. My Gido was an avid fiddle player and loved to record his own tunes. Thatchwood Waltz was one of those tunes. Naturally, it became the namesake for my thesis.
I hope this project inspires you to learn a new instrument, or simply find time to connect with those close to you, as I had the opportunity to do when playing the fiddle with my Gido.

“Mixing familiar favorites with contemporary quirks. An amalgamation of spaces igniting and defining traditional music to be discovered and explored through the many lenses of the senses; allowing people to define and discover passions for music.”
This video features myself, my cousin Katrina on the Piano, Auntie Linda on the guitar, and my Gido Harry Krawchuk. Christmas 2019
A space allowing for social connection and community within the multitude of uses.
Aimed to allow free exploration and engagement with the violin, stripped of barriers and interactions.
A space for continuing education, growth and refinement in learning.
My main focus was on creating exposure to the public on this floor. I placed the engagement space and jam room street facing to facilitate this, and bring natural light into the space. I wanted to ensure that there was opportunity for both formal and informal performance and created a feature staircase that facilitated this need.
I wanted to create and further emphasize focus on the feature staircase. The reception maintains a first point of contact for users as they either head to the lesson side of the space or the more corporate office and boardroom side.
