Through an integrated living experience, the 2Gather House attempts to resolve some of the multifaceted issues surrounding affordable housing, nutritional health & wellbeing and community belonging among senior and international post-secondary students.
Every aspect of the social support and interior design of the 2Gather House has been deeply considered. For this reason, the Corus building is divided into 3 main areas of focus – the house, the garden and the public HERB market + café. These areas all exist to support the needs of the residents: the housing areas are to support their private and communal living activities; the vertical garden serves to provide them with a common collective purpose; and the HERB market + café provide them with an opportunity to sell their produce - flowing earnings back into the housing project and to residents directly. In this way, the 2Gather housing model offers its residents a degree of sustainability and control over their own quality of life.
The 2Gather House aims to offer an alternative housing model where both social support and spatial design come together to create meaningful space that nurtures all aspects of the human condition. It's fundamental purpose is to support people in coming together - 2Gather.
This project was inspired by my late grandmother, who passed away earlier this year, and by all my elders who have touched and blessed my life with their wisdom and council. My reflections on these fundamental relationships inspired the concept statement...
Always warm - a symbol of comfort.
Hands wrapping around mine, gentle, loving.
An embrace encircling generations.
Precious is the moment; eternal, the gesture.
Home is love.
Materials and furniture selections for the residential suites are neutral and allow for residents to add their own items and personality. The general aesthetic of natural materials and earthy tones are carried throughout the whole of the 2Gather Housing development.
Materials for the Grow 2Gather vertical garden accommodate for wear and exposure to the elements such as water, soil and basic gardening activities. A combination of concrete, brick, and wood accents allow the abundance of natural plant life in this space to read most strongly.
Finishes and furniture selections for the HERB market and café are chosen for their durability and calm aesthetic properties. The flooring is laid with terrazzo tile, the countertops are concrete with tamber accent surrounding the service counter. Combined with a warm earthy palette, the space conveys a sense of ease and comfort.
