"CRAFTED"
FOOD CENTRE
restaurant â—‹ MARKET â—‹ STUDIO & GALLERY
"Crafted" is a food center based in Calgary that focuses on the celebration of food in all it's elements. The ingredients, the process, and the presentation. Crafted's goal is to bridge the disconnect between society and their food, and impart a thoughtful relationship.
Rapid urbanization of the food industry over the last century has disconnected people and their food. With the industrialization of the food market, we, as a society have created a censorship to the point where food is degraded to a cheap commodity. As a result the experience around food has suffered as well. When is the last time you sat down and truly enjoyed a meal?
Calgary's food scene has rapidly grown over the last decade. With food markets and farm to table restaurants popping up at the center of every popular district. While each move toward more sustainable options, there is still an issue that is not resolved. Crafted's mission is to change the mindset around food and provide a unique experience that collaborates with local artisans, farmers, and the industry to build community.
Some of my warmest memories are surrounded by an experience sharing food with beloved people in my life. Crafted emulates that warmth and the feeling of something being hand crafted to those that interact with the food center.
1ST FLOOR: RESTAURANT & MARKET
The food center is comprised of a series of events ...

Ceramic Studio
The dining experience.
Fresh, locally sourced ingredients come together at the table.
LOUNGE
This cozy area acts as a casual dining experience that is separate from the main dining space. This provides comfort for individuals coming from the market, looking for a quick meal. After the market closes, the lounge truly becomes a lounge. Serving drinks and even providing temporary seating if the main dining hall is full.
MAIN DINING
The main dining space provides the full experience. Encapsulated by the warm wood finishes, generous booth seating and the gentle light from the featured pendants.
PLATING
All serving ware is provided by local artists and produced in the ceramic studio on the second floor.
MATERIALITY
The space mixes modern and rustic materials to relate better to modern Calgary. The screens provide privacy between the lounge and main spaces. The tile on the ceiling is a pixelated image of steam. The image on the screen is printed on glass to allow some light to pass through and reinforce the concept.
Creating Community.
The market provides a bevy of fresh produce, local artisanal products, a wine vendor and a cafe.
MATERIALITY
The space is filled with elements that represent and process. A few features include repurposed wheelbarrows, wine barrels, and crates as table and display components.
2ND FLOOR: CERAMIC STUDIO & GALLERY
Reflection.
Filled by local artists and inspired by interactive museums.
ENTRY
The entry of the space is separate and quiet. This allows for the transition between the activity space of the studio workshop to a reflective feeling.
CIRCULATION
The space has a retail component to it. The art at the center of the space divides the retail area from the main gallery portion towards the windows. The gallery also works with the path of travel. Nearest to the entry of the gallery are the serving ware for appetizers, at the middle, the entrée, tea/coffee and dessert towards the back. The exhibit is meant to be playful. Therefore, the center where the entree-ware reside are set how you would a table for eating.
MATERIALITY
Interaction.
The studio serves local artists and new groups and individuals to create their own serving ware and take a piece of their experience home.
Through the ceramic studio, guests are able to bring something of their experience at Crafted back with them. The studio provides a way to interact experience and inform food through their choice of serving ware.
