Project Background
The past two years have dramatically changed the nature of our daily social interactions. More than ever we are able to understand collective feelings of isolation from our family, friends and community. Through this social isolation I have looked back fondly on all of my time spent with older generations within my family and close circle of friends. I greatly cherish the value of learning from and connecting with these groups. These experiences have guided much of my inspiration and development of my final thesis project. In consideration of activities within the space such as gardening the development of an attached restaurant became evident. A separate space is created that blends seamlessly with the rest of the center. Backed with extensive research and in depth interviews with industry professionals I have created an intergenerational community center that holds these interactions at the forefront of every decision.
Seesaw Intergenerational Community Center
In deciding the name of my community center I was largely guided by the idea of creating a space that levelled the generational gap that would be present. The young keep the elderly youthful, the elderly teach the young wisdom all within a playful, interactive, and educational environment. The name seesaw implies that there is a balance and give and take present within these relationships. Both groups are able to learn and achieve a greater appreciation for the other.
Design + Atmospheric Intent
This space largely works to create a comfortable, familiar and inviting environment. Through the use of a natural and youthful material palette this feeling is achieved. Warm woods are accented with soft and colorful fabrics, all while the space is brought to life through careful attention to details and sensory qualities. Activity spaces are divided through the use of integrated millwork and textured glass for partial visual and audial separation, this paired with a variety of seating options allows the users to create personal and meaningful connections with each space. Every aspect of the design should be familiar to the user, whether that be material and furniture selection or integrated details. The community's interaction is an integral part of my design, they are what brings the space to life.
Conceptual Intent
Through careful consideration and planning, Seesaw Intergenerational Community Center, works as an environment that fosters learning from one another in a social and friendly space. No one experience is identical, the use of varied seating and atmospheres presents the user with the opportunity to choose their own path within as they desire.
