Farm-to-Table Restaurant & Bar | Canadian Costume Gallery | Costume Design Studio
In Canada we are known for many things: our beautiful landscapes, the people, our agriculture and more recently, our contribution to the film industry. For my thesis project I aim to create a building that combines these different pieces of what makes Canada unique into a vibrant hub for Calgarians and others alike.
In the age of people prioritizing their wellbeing and wanting to have authentic experiences, there is an increased demand for unique dining options. In addition, the public is more curious about what goes into our food the path their food takes to a plate. In large urban centers like Calgary, people often lack access to green spaces and aren’t exposed to modern day agricultural practices. I want to create a restaurant that helps educate the public on all the different types of food that Canada can product, while providing an escape from the urban city environment.
Canada has been seeing an increase in major movie productions and with it, an increasing demand for the supporting trades. Currently Calgary does not have a strong presence in the costume design world, but with a growing number of projects being filmed in Alberta, there is the opportunity for new companies to become established. I aim to create a costume design studio that would be able to provide costumes to Alberta filmed movie productions, while also providing a gallery space to encourage a public interest in completed and upcoming films.
Concept Statement:
Fostering an authentic gathering space that celebrates making, engages the senses, and promotes community through the Canadian identity.

The reclaimed and mismatched dining chairs and salvaged light fixtures add to the eclectic feel within the space.
Perspective of the Restaurant's Bar
The pallet incorporates authentic materials, textures with visual interest and natural tones.
The sections show key features within different areas. These include tack boards in the sewing studio, costume displays in the gallery, live plants in the restaurant, and feature walls in the dining and take out spaces.
The costume gallery houses many unique costume displays from productions that were filmed in Alberta or that were created in the costume studio and featured in movies filmed elsewhere. The shared glass wall allows guests to see the behind the scenes of a costume studio and sometimes a sneak peak of upcoming projects. This can help not only gain support for upcoming Canadian/ Alberta productions, but can inspire a new generation to get involved as the film industry continues to grow.
The second level has recycled gym flooring with colours inspired by British Columbia's emerald lakes and bright autumn leaves.
The studio is flooded with natural and artificial lightings to aid in costume assembly as well as creating an energizing and creative environment.
The pallet brings together Canadian materials , neutral tones and a mixture of vintage and new furniture and fixtures.
