KCAI Possible Selves Program Materials
These materials were developed for the Kansas City Art Institute's Japanese Language & Culture 2 course.
Students develop their language vision and action plans based on Japanese language proficiency and becoming a professional artist.
Each unit is completed in 2 weeks and includes at-home and in-class language activities, artistic assignment, ethnographic writing, and a possible selves reflection.
Student work can be used for classroom research to track changing trends in student demographics and monitoring alumni activities.
I am currently experimenting with the best way to present the materials to the KCAI students. Possible options include canvas course, google classroom, interactive notebook, and hardcopy worksheets.
Below are links to the original unit materials and a sample of how it may look as an interactive notebook.
Unit 1 Questioning: Answer “Who are you as a language user now and in the future?” (Baku the Nightmare Eater)
Unit 2 Discovering: Discover your strengths and interests (Shichifukujin the 7 gods of good fortune)
Unit 3 Thinking: Answer the question “Who am I?” (Manakineko the beckoning cat)
Unit 4 Sketching: Sketch a Possible Selves Tree using information from Lesson 2 (TREE)
Unit 5 Reflecting: Answer the question “What can I be?” (Daruma)
Unit 6 Growing: Answer “How do I get there?” (Kaizen - Continual Improvement)
