These are other projects I designed or enhanced during my MAFLT program. The Disaster Preparation Poster is designed to first bring attention to the students about the dangers of living in Japan: earthquakes, tsunami, typhoons, mudslides, and more. Since the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake there has been significant effort to help citizens prepare for emergencies.
Unfortunately the original Lesson Plan was lost when my computer crashed. I've resurrected the simple steps here that are used in my Semester 1 courses
After students have studied Katakana they create the Disaster Bag Poster. Using Multi-literacy methodologies,
This is the Semester 1 group work site. The class explored disaster preparation in Japan with a few videos and then reading the Katakana words from a government check list. Students identified words they could read, created a mini picture glossary, selected adjective for each item, wrote a brief essay, then illustrated their work in a poster.
Step 1: Discovery
Students annotate a Disaster Bag Checklist from the Yokohoma City Government office. They are paying attention to items written in Katakana - these are often loanwords (cognates). Students identify 10 words they can figure out and create a personal glossary.
Step 2: Application
Students use recently learned adjectives to describe each of their items in simple patterns.
Step 3: Discussion
Students ask each other what is in their disaster preparation bags and comment on if they have the same item or not.
Step 4: Writing
Students create adjective+noun pairs to use in a simple essay about what they will put in their disaster bag.
Step 5: Assessment
Students design a Disaster Preparation Poster the highlights 10 items they will put in their bag and their essay.
These posters are then displayed in their academic departments
