At the Kansas City Art Institute, our students learn best through hands on group projects. Quarantine has been difficult for them and online learning is not the best environment for them. My compromise was to develop group writing projects that explored various genres, new vocabulary and grammar, and to visually reflect and produce a finished product. Some were on jamboard, but the finished product on google slides makes it easier to use in class and to share after. These were mostly used with the lowest level which needed the support. My upper level students did not seem to need group writing as much, but they did read more graded readers.
Each google slide is from several class periods. Students begin by making glossaries or notes on what they are observing, practice speaking with partners about their discoveries, and then they produce a poster or other visual product that also includes the written words.
Within each slide presentation each student produces their own page. This communal style of writing provided support to less confident students and allowed me to see what all students were producing at the same time during our online classes.
