The HSGC garden project originated around the year 2004 with a Ruth Mott grant. It consists of eight individual gardens positioned along the front of the building, around the parking lot, at the Joyce St. exit, and the Dort Highway entrance. A large berm has a “Memorial Path” running down the center and a gazebo at one end. The gardens were recently certified as a Monarch Waystation and are interspersed with Monarch friendly wildflowers, including butterfly weed, swamp milkweed, and common milkweed. The gardens are planted and maintained by EMGs with the help of HSGC staff, students earning community service hours (Mott Middle College), and other interested community groups. All participants receive hands-on education planting, weeding, fertilizing, mulching, and deadheading, and are able to install plant label stakes in the Spring. The MGAGCM supports the HSGC fundraisers April “Paws on Parade” and October “Treats for Tricks”/Keylore Dog Park Outreach.
