The Butterfly Garden was designed in 2012-2013 on previous site of “Busters” Marathon Gas Station whose owner retired. The EPA standards directed the land clean up by the city of Flushing. Our landscape is fairly flat with a kidney shaped berm highlighting the butterfly garden plants. The garden site is moderate in size offering many different types of plants from trees protecting the shade plants, to open areas of full sun. You can’t miss the very large unique cup plant (silphium perfoliation) that grows to heights of 6 to 8 feet tall in the butterfly garden. Leafs hold rain water for the birds, bees, and butterflies. Annual plantings can vary with cosmos, coleus, begonias, fennel, parsley, and spectacular Mexican Sunflowers to name a few to help support many different types of butterflies including Monarchs. Two large butterfly seating areas view the peaceful garden. While sitting in the butterfly chairs enjoying a closer look, plant identification signs are prominent. Development of an interactive butterfly and bee educational sign for the residents is a future goal. This is a very friendly garden to work in with many compliments from walkers, passing autos, and Facebook.
