About Us
English Debate Club is a platform for free and constructive discourse on a variety of exciting topics, ranging from introspective issues to social issues. Our principle: to challenge the status-quo stereotypes and express our voices with reasoning, style and passion!
Twice a week, we carry out internal spars in various debating formats, applying logical reasoning to prove to a panel of judges why we should win. This helps us hone an array of skill sets like critical thinking and public speaking, which are relevant in the 21st century. We also dive deep into content lectures on topics ranging from current affairs to philosophy.
Additionally, the club has plenty of opportunities available annually. A few of the most prominent competitions we participate in yearly include the prestigious MOE-ACJC Intercollegiate Debating Championships and the Intertext Asian Parliamentary Debate Open. These tournaments act as good milestones, and challenge us to demonstrate flair and logical reasoning. We also have judging opportunities available in the Debate Association Debating Championships (DADC). Apart from that, we also host tournaments for secondary schools and friendly spars with other junior colleges.
If these are things you are interested in, we hope to see you in debates this year!

FAQs
Is prior experience required for debates?
No! We welcome anyone open to learning new things and willing to step out of their comfort zones.
In fact, many of our members are new to debates but have slowly picked up debating skills through the wonderful training sessions conducted by our coach, Nabilah!
Additionally, debates provides a strong pillar of support from friends, seniors, and teachers :D
Personal Experiences
Through our CCA sessions, debates allows us to have greater exposure to real-world issues and often leaves us seeing things through various lens. I don't think there's a session that stands out particularly, but every session (with different motions) comes with its own set of challenges that makes for an interesting and intellectually stimulating experience.

My most memorable experience in EL Debates has got to be preparing and participating in Singapore Secondary Schools Debating Championships (SSSDCs). SSSDCs is one of the biggest opportunities all secondary school debaters can look forward to and I was very thrilled to be part of the team representing our school. During the preparation period, trainings got tougher as expectations of us were high. However, the process has allowed us to foster our camaraderie by supporting each other when met with difficulties. I will never forget the encouragements we give other before the tournament and how we bonded over team dinners after each match. Looking back, I'm so glad to have joined EL Debates and forge so many priceless friendships and memories.
