Fifth-generation cephalosporins, like Ceftaroline, were developed to fight resistant bacteria such as MRSA. They are β-lactam antibiotics that work by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, and are especially effective when other antibiotics fail.
• Ceftaroline is a β-lactam antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis.
• It binds to Penicillin-Binding Proteins (PBPs)—specifically PBP2a, which is found in MRSA.
• PBP2a is usually resistant to most β-lactams, but ceftaroline can bind to it strongly.
• This binding blocks the cross-linking of peptidoglycan chains in the bacterial cell wall.
• As a result, the bacterial cell wall becomes weak and the cell lyses (bursts) and dies
