My teacher work sample was a statistic unit. In the middle of my teacher work sample the school moved to remote learning. So several of my lessons were built for students online instead of the traditional in class lesson. This unit took place in a 7th grade math classroom and took place over 3 weeks. The first two lessons apart of this unit were taught in 80 minute blocks, but with the change to online learning the last three lessons were taught in 60 minute blocks. With the COVID-19 pandemic affecting the timing of school my unit was extended over more time than we planned for. During this unit students were building to creating their own survey to give to their classmates. Students created a survey that was sent out in their class streams via google classroom. The summative assessment was a reflection of the responses from their surveys and the goal of the reflection is to have students analyze and reflect on their own data sets. A rubric was created to compare the pre-assessment answers to the summative assessments to track student learning over the course of the unit. My pre-assessment was a great starting point for the unit, and based on students answers I was able to find a starting point that would be good for all of my students and then build off of that for the duration of the unit.
While collecting information and data for my CFA I was able to give students a survey to see how they feel about math. While collecting data I had about 80% of students say they prefer working in partners or in small groups. Another important statistic I found out during my CFA was that only about 15% of my students say that math is their favorite subject. Both of those questions played a huge role in planning of my TWS. I knew that not many of students loved math and that they preferred working in small groups. I tried to use that data to create a simple plan that was build off of the previous math lesson. I incorporated as much small group work as I could to have students working with one in other during class time.
When we moved to remote learning we did a survey for all of our 7th grade students to see who had wifi at home. This data had an affect on my plan because for the students who don't have wifi at home I had to create a paper packet to give to them to work on. So for the purpose of the data for my TWS I will only be collecting the work of students with internet because our school policy is that we can not collect any packets that do go home with students.
For my TWS I used to previous units that we had done together in class to guide my instruction for this statistics unit. My plan was to keep students going in a similar routine and making my classroom a comfortable environment for them to learn in. Many of my students had different social and emotional needs not being met during this time because of the states quarantine policy, so it was important that I created an open line of communication with my students during the entire unit.
