The teacher understands how students learn and develop, recognizing that patterns of learning and development vary individually within and across the cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical areas, and designs and implements developmentally appropriate and challenging learning experiences.
This means the teacher knows about student development and knowledge, they understand how important student growth is in their classroom and we need to meet students needs in different ways and plan to instruct students based on the needs for all students.
Indicator 1h: Respects learner's differing strengths and needs and is committed to using this information to further each learners's development.
Rationale:
The artifact is my student interest survey that was made at the beginning of my placement and helped towards my contextual factors analysis. I used this survey to try to get to know my students better inside and outside of the classroom. Asking questions specific to school and learning, but also what they like to do outside of the classroom. The answers on this survey were used to drive my instruction throughout my time in the placement.
This artifact meets the first standard because I'm using a way to better understand my students. For this artifact I used this survey as a tool to better understand how my students learn best. I used these answers to implement learning and lessons that would further challenge my students in all of the activities we did in class. In a middle school classroom social and emotional is very important, so asking students questions outside of the classroom was the way I was able to get to know students better and meet their social and emotional needs during ever lesson. This artifact is a perfect representation of indicator h because I used this survey to learn how different students learn best in their own way. I used the answers of all my students to meet the needs of every student in my classroom and was committed to using this data to grow and develop each students learning in my classroom.
Indicator 1e: Understands that each learner's cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical development influences learning and knows how to make instructional decisions that build on learner's strengths and needs.
Rationale:
This artifact is a check in survey for my students from the change from regular classroom learning to remote learning. This survey was sent out to students during the week off students had while the school district figured out how to move to remote learning. I used this survey to base where all my students with remote learning and let them know I will be supporting them during this time. This survey was mostly about the social and emotional learning that was going into my planning for the next unit, so I could see where students were at and making sure everyone is comfortable with remote learning and knows they are able to reach out to teachers during this time.
I felt that this artifact meets the standard because I'm using a survey or a check in to understand my students learning needs with the move to remote learning. Social and emotional learning is an important aspect to this standard and this artifact meets those needs. Finding a base for students with the move to remote learning is important for learner development and being able to challenge students in an academic way for students. I chose indicator e because this artifact takes in to account where students are at and will play a role in my instructional decision making based on my students needs. I asked students these questions at the beginning of remote learning so I could use answers to build my instruction for the unit to drive my instruction and meet the needs of all my students. I feel that overall this artifact is a great example of learner development and finding a baseline for all students and planning my instruction to meet the needs of all students to challenge them throughout the unit.
