Learning Targets
LT1: Students will use the information to learn more about the population.
LT2: Students understand the difference between a population and sample
LT3: Students will be able to have a basic understanding of quantitative variables and categorical variables
LT4: Students will be able to identify bias involved in a random sampling question
LT5: Students will have a basic understanding of how to create a survey
LT6: Students will understand how to analyze data from their surveys
Understand that statistics can be used to gain information about a population by examining a sample of the population; generalizations about a population from a sample are valid only if the sample is representative of that population. Understand that random sampling tends to produce representative samples and support valid inferences.
When coming up with learning targets for this unit I tried to methodical in efforts to match sure the learning targets were closely aligned with the standard we were using for this unit. I found that is was very efficient to build my learning targets and then plan my lesson and direct instruction around them. I worked a lot with my mentor teacher to come up with learning targets that were very relevant for students and that they were used to seeing them in every lesson. I also used blooms taxonomy to used different wordage that would be more familiar with students and in return students would feel more comfortable when working with these learning targets. For every lesson I do, I start the lesson and class by introducing the learning targets and making sure students know what they should be focusing on during the lesson. I also finish class or lesson up by mentioning the learning targets again. To see if students feel that they have met each target I have them do a thumbs up, thumbs sideways, and thumbs down to see how they are feeling about each learning target and the content that we discussed in class. The rubric used for pre-assessment and summative assessment was built closely around the standard and learning targets.
My first four learning targets come from the direct instruction that we did in class. Based on my pre-assessment I noticed many of my students had no prior knowledge on statistics. I chose to start with the basics and my goal of the first four learning targets were to be simple for all of my students. I used many different examples throughout my lesson and had several different class discussion that were based meeting the learning targets. Population and sample size were the building blocks of my unit. These learning targets helped prepare students for the summative assessment. The first four learning targets were apart of the creation of my students surveys so they needed to have a firm understanding to be able to meet the standard for the summative assessment.
My last two learning targets were more oriented with the summative assessment. Students needed to show that they were able to make and implement a survey in their class, as while as reflect and analyze at their classmates responses. This meets the standard because students were using different variables in statistics to gain more information about the population and sample. With that standard being implemented students showed that they were able to random sample a sample and learn more information about the population.
The self assessments students did throughout the unit were very important for me to see where they were at in their learning. Although when we went to remote learning it was more difficult to check in with all students, I was able to be there for students who needed extra help to meet the standard. In my first several lessons I really used self assessments during direct instruction to see where all of my students were at. Having all of the learning goals in a place where students can see them and become more familiar proved to be very good during this unit. I felt that the more my students became comfortable with these targets they were really able to show me they were able to meet all learning targets and the standard for this unit.
