Patterning & Algebra, Number Sense & Numeration

Learning Goal:

Students will learn to count forward and backwards by various numbers and from various starting points. They will also be describing, extending and creating a variety of numeric patterns.

Required Supplies:

      • iPad with Blockly or Blocklify
      • Dash
      • a number line with 10 cm intervals marked out (could use tape on floor)

Instructions or Directions:

Kyle starts at 10 and adds 60 every time.Marla starts at 30 and adds 70 every time. What is the first number that appears in both Kyle & Marla's pattern?
  1. Students read the above problem and will use Dash as a manipulative to try to solve the problem.


Reflection Questions:

  1. How did you solve this problem?
  2. What if you changed the place each person starts? Does this change the first number that appears in both of their patterns?
  3. What happens if you change the interval of their movement?
