Making Symmetrical Designs

Recommended Grade: Primary

Curriculum Expectations:

Geometry and Spatial Sense

Learning Goal:

We are learning to recognize lines of symmetry through investigation of drawing our own and/or completing symmetrical designs.

Required Supplies:

      • Ipad
      • Blockly App
      • Dash
      • SketchKit
      • Tape

Instructions or Directions:

  1. Provide students with a line of symmetry on the SketchKit whiteboard by laying down a piece of masking tape.
  2. Ask students to code Dash to create a symmetrical shape based on this line of symmetry. (Teachers could also specify which shape they want students to make, and progress from there.)

Possible Extensions:

  1. Provide more than 1 line of symmetry for students
  2. Provide a part of a drawing in which students need to complete the symmetrical design by having Dash draw it (Be sure that the partial design required can be completed at 10 cm intervals to ensure the task can be completed with Dash)

Reflection Questions:

  1. What challenges did you encounter during this activity?
  2. How do you know if your shape is symmetrical or not?
