Guess my Polygon

Recommended Grade: Primary

Curriculum Expectations (strand): Geometry and Spatial Sense

*identify common two-dimensional shapes and three-dimensional figures and sort and classify them by their attributes and geometric properties

Learning Goal:

We are learning to identify and compare the properties of geometric shapes so that we can see the relationships between 2D shapes and 3D solids.

Required Supplies:

      • Ipad
      • Dot
      • Geometric/ Patterning blocks/3D figures
      • Paper and pencil
      • Blockly App

Instructions or Directions:

Step 1: Download the Blockly App from the App Store

Step 2: Take out Dot from the box and turn on. You may need to charge or update. Please check ahead of time

Step 3: Turn on Dot and open Blockly App

Step 4: Connect Dot using Bluetooth to the Ipad

Step 5: Have students press one button at a time and listen to the clue

Step 6: While students are listening, they may pick a pattern block or solid from the bin based on the instructions given by Dot

Step 7: They will complete this each time (buttons 1-3) and choose a shape or solid that best fits the description

Step 8: They can now press the centre button to hear what shape or solid Dot was describing

Step 9: When students have completed this task, they may try to create their own riddle and share with the class, allowing them to guess which shape or solid they have picked.

Reflection Questions:

1. How did you know which shape or solid to choose?

2. How did your guesses change with each different description, or did your guess change? Why?

3. When you were giving instructions, what did you have to think of before giving your clue?

4. What would you change if you were to do this again? Why?
