We are learning to solve addition and subtraction problems using concrete materials and student generated algorithms.

- Learning Carpet (or taped out grid on the floor)
- variety of math manipulatives
- Blockly App (or Blocklify for French)
- iPad mini
- Whiteboard with marker (or chart paper)
- Number line

Students are trying to gather all of the possible parts that are required to get to the sum of their whole value.
Directions:
Directions:
- Determine what the 'whole' will be that you want your students to work towards (i.e. 10, 15, 12, 20, etc).
- Place a variety of math manipulatives in the different grid spaces that would be considered a part of the whole you want your students to arrive at.
- Tell students what their 'whole' will be that you had previously chosen.
- Have students look at the grid and program Dash to move around the grid, taking turns to collect their 'parts' until they reach their whole. Their final sum must equal their 'whole' number exactly.
- Encourage students to record the steps they are taking so students are showing their thinking as they complete each move
a) Filling in 10 frames
b) Using a number sentence
c) Using snap cubes
d) Recording on a number line.
6. Challenge students to find other ways they could get to their whole.
