The Luminate Cup

The Luminate Cup is a cross-group competition for students 16+ to engage in a range of competitions that develop a range of employability skills. It creates opportunities to bring people together from different courses and campuses and offers students the chance to represent their campus and college.

In its first year the Luminate Cup engaged 95 students in different events including football, basketball, table tennis and esports. In 2023-24 the Student Life Enrichment team will expand this offer to offer opportunities for more students to engage in a wider variety of activities.

Future Minds Festival

Summer is just around the corner and we’re celebrating the start of the sunshine season by holding a free festival in Roundhay Park for all of the family. On Saturday 9 July from 10am till 4pm, the Future Minds Festival will be taking over Soldier’s Field.

Set to the soundtrack of live music, there are a range of activities to get involved in. Make yourself a paracord bracelet in our Arts & Crafts tent, visit Hair & Beauty for festival glitter, or how about asking Healthcare for a realistic fake cast?

If car racing is more your speed, check out the rally car display. You can visit the RE: stall to see sustainably-made furniture. Joinery students are also getting creative, designing and building bird boxes.

Got little ones in the family? Bring them along! There’s plenty of fun for all the family, with activities for all ages. Toddlers can explore our sensory play area and, while you’re enjoying the live music, why not take part in giant jenga?

For all this and so much more, head down to Roundhay Park, grab yourself an ice cream and a slice of pizza, and have some fun free of charge!

Full details can be found here, and you can book your tickets on our Eventbrite page.

See you there!

Camp America

How does the chance of spending at least nine weeks in the United States this summer, with all travel, accommodation and living costs funded, sound? Camp America has offered us 90 places for our students to experience this once in a lifetime opportunity.

The trip represents a wonderful chance to hone your employability skills by caring for, and being a role model to children at a holiday camp - all while immersing yourself in the culture of another country.

The work placement lasts nine weeks, after which you will also have the option of staying for another 30 days to further explore the US.

There will also be opportunities to act as an ambassador for Camp America, by talking to others about your experiences, following the trip.

You need to be 18 years old or over to be eligible for the trip. A video showing what life on a camp is like can be viewed here, while full details of how to apply can be found here

LGBTQ+ History Month blogs

Today marks the start of LGBTQ+ History Month, an annual celebration and remembrance of the LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer + others) community.

LGBTQ+ History Month has been an annual celebration in the UK since 2005, however, the month was founded in the US after Rodney Wilson, the first openly gay teacher in Missouri, originated the idea.

With a lack of education and awareness, members of the LGBTQ+ community still face prejudice today. The overall aims of this month are to promote equality and diversity for the LGBTQ+ community, to acknowledge and value their contributions to society, and most importantly; to ensure they feel safe and accepted.

Read the full article here, a piece on LGTBQ+ education, one on community, and a series of reflections on the month from Jennie Appleyard.
