For year 7, we are focusing on rhythm and silence in composition, in order to create a piece that reflects a personal narrative. We are studying the use of rhythmical notation and body percussion to create cohesive rhythms, with a strong emphasis on practical endeavours to allow students to think creatively about ways to make music.

For year 8, we are studying Popular music and how Blues and Jazz have influenced Pop Music’s instrumentation, arrangements and structure. Specifically, our focus is on arrangements and cover versions, and how musicians have reinterpreted songs to make these their own. Our main reference is Ben E King’s piece “Stand by me”: it’s hook, riff and how students could update it with their musical knowledge.
