Year 7 students have had the opportunity to reflect on the work they completed over the first fortnight and to evaluate their knowledge of the topic. In order for us to understand their progress, we have invited students to participate in different games during lesson time. As languages teachers, we aspire to engage our students in creative interactions in the language they are learning. Therefore, this module, our Year 7 students will need to produce a criteria C assessment (speaking) describing where they live. As always, we allow our students to use their imagination and describe a fictional world. Students will need to produce a video, a podcast or a presentation with a voice over so that they can be assessed in their speaking skills. Please encourage students to practise before recording.

Our students do not cease to impress us with their positive attitude and commitment to learning a new language. Despite how challenging it has been for them to miss out on some of the aspects of learning a language, we have still been able to play games online and continue to enthuse them with the most fun parts of learning Spanish. In our quest to help students become accepting of making mistakes, we have assigned them a speaking task, which requires them to step out of their comfort zone.
Year 7
Even though all of our students deserve mentioning for one reason or another, we would like to make a special mention to the following students for their incredible work this module. They will be receiving 3 merits for Scholarship or Ambition on Bromcom.
Year 8
Over the last two weeks of this term, our goal has been to give our students as many opportunities as possible to memorise the vocabulary of the unit. As we aim to deepen students’ understanding by working closely with other departments, the Science department have included some Spanish revision in their next unit of study, which will be about “Healthy Living” as well. The following students will receive 3 merits for either Scholarship or Ambition, to recognise their relentless effort in Spanish this module. We would have loved to celebrate their achievements in person, since we are not able to, please celebrate this with them at home.
Students continue to work on the concept of “Healthy Living” by exploring what makes a healthy lifestyle and learning how to give advice to others. In order to bring to online lessons the games that we would do in school, Ms Gilmore and Ms Garcia have been encouraging students to join a Google Meet during lesson time to play vocabulary games together. This module students will be assessed on Criteria D, which is a written piece. In order for it to be accessible for all, this will be in the form of a translation completed via Google Forms. Please encourage your child to log onto the Google Meets so that they can stay connected with peers and teachers.

Students continue to show great independence and responsibility by engaging in more challenging work as they approach the end of KS3. They have been exploring how “Culture” and “Education” are interconnected, looking at their prospects for the future. Year 9 work has revolved around Criteria A and B, which are those that develop listening and reading skills. Please continue to motivate your child to engage in memory games, as to build a good foundation for KS4 Spanish. In addition, they are encouraged to take part in activities that will assist them in their language learning journey, such as watching videos and listening to Spanish speaking music.

Year 9
As our Year 9 get ready to choose their option for their GCSE qualifications, we have continued to explore the importance of further education in this module and they have had time to reflect on their plans for the future. Being able to speak in a variety of tenses will be crucial for our students to be successful when they take Spanish GCSE, so we would like for families and carers to encourage students to explore this aspect of the language. They can do so through the website Languagenut. The ability to find the motivation to take their language journey outside of the classroom environment will determine their success later on. Therefore, any activities our students can take part in that revolve around the language will be highly beneficial for them. Some examples include: listening to music, watching programmes and films, changing the settings in their phones or chromebooks, etc.
It is not an easy task to recognise students’ efforts. This is not because students do not work hard enough, but because we would not have enough time and space to recognise all of their incredible achievements over the last module. However, the following students will receive 3 merits in recognition of their Scholarship or Ambition in the last module.
Reed 7C Great wall of China
Bea 7C Berlin Tower
Regina 7C Machu Picchu
Mother Language Day
On Friday 26th of February we celebrated International Mother Language Day (MLD) at LAB. This is an initiative by UNESCO to promote linguistic and cultural diversity.
During this event, students took part in different sessions and debates with their tutor virtually. They watched videos of their teachers describing what languages they speak or are interested in and why learning languages is important for their future prospects. They also took part in a service as action project involving the investigation of a language at risk of becoming extinct. Students had to use different sources to investigate one language of their choice and develop a plan to raise awareness.
Debates amongst students were very fruitful with topics ranging from “How are languages and culture linked?” to “Should schools in Britain teach Latin?”. Students showed great engagement and enthusiasm during the event, which culminated in the creation of different monuments around the world where English was not spoken, using materials they could find at home.
We are looking forward to continuing these celebrations of culture and heritage in future events.
Sweet Marketing Event
Business Language Champions is a company that aims at promoting language learning and cultural understanding whilst engaging students in real life situations. Some of our Year 9 students have taken part in a languages career event this module, where they practiced their marketing skills by creating their own sweet brands, logos and mottos.
Thank you to Sally and their team for making this event possible, even during these difficult times, and for showing our students some of the endless possibilities of the use of languages in their lives.
