Students Centered Learning is where students control their own learning pace while the teacher facilitate and manages them to make sure that they are learning the right thing. Inquiry Base Learning (IBL) and Problem Base Learning (PBL) are the two approaches of Student-Centered Learning. It is an approach to education, which aims at overcoming some of the problems inherent to more traditional forms of education. These methodologies are more profitable to learner as they can rely in themselves and control their own learning pace.
First of all, Inquiry Base Learning is a learning process that encourages and engage learners to research and investigate complications through exploration and questioning. Allow students to explore their natural curiosities, critical thinking skills and creativity from what they had learned inside the classroom and to the real-life situation. Work depends mostly on students to do activities on their own where a teacher act as a facilitator. Piaget and Vygotsky theory both deal with the developing of the mind and cognitive of young children.
To add more, an important implication of Piaget theory is the addition of instruction to the learner developmental level. Focuses on an individual child, one child at a time. for instance, individual activities like building blocks, coloring, etc. Permit a learner to explore their critical thinking skills and encourages them to discover for themselves. According to Vygotsky theory, he focuses on a group of children. Zeroed in social learning and putting children in group as he believes when children are in groups they talk and learn a lot of social skills because learning is not simply mental ability, mental development, and metal group. Learning is about developing the whole child. For example, group work, classroom debates, etc.
In addition, problem-based learning is where learners apply what they had experienced. This approach is allowed students to do or hands-on the activity to find out the results they get from the research they investigate. After their discussion and interacting with each other they take notes of their observation and can connect pragmatism view to form one thing. They need to hands-on or do the activity to find out the result of their doing as sometimes things work out and sometimes accidents occur. John Dewey theory assumed that learning by doing is better when children are actively engaged in the activity.
However, inquiry-based learning and problem-based learning are the two methodology of students centered teaching pedagogies which assist motivate the knowledge and skills of a learner. Focus on the process of children’s thinking and providing opportunities for them to explore experiments. Interacting and discuss with each other to learn and formulate their ideas and to see the world from a different point of view. Thus, SCL is an essential strategy for the learning process as it engaged and developed students learning pace.
