Yearbook Manaʻo from Poʻokumu Lehua
[E kanu i ka huli ʻoi hāʻule ka ua] has been with us for generations. To better understand this ʻōlelo noʻeau, when you ready yourself for a task, look for those opportunities that will allow you to complete your task successfully. Be aware of what is around you in the space that you are in. This mindset is important for all of us to have. We have the ability and capability to make a decision in a timely manner and prepare ourselves for situations that we come upon. Whenever an opportunity presents itself, we need to be attentive and take advantage of such opportunities. It is important to know your moʻokūʻauhau (genealogy), mōʻaukala (history), and nohona (place) in everything that you do and as you move forward on the pathway you travel upon.
I think the biggest challenge now is keeping up with uncertainty. We know change is inevitable and must occur. They might appear quickly and consistently, but changes will always come, and we need to recognize those changes and challenges and look at the opportunities offer for us to move forward. It is important to maintain the kahua - foundation - of our kauhale for us to succeed. The strength of our kahua as a school will allow us to remain focused on the vision and mission of our founder, Bernice Pauahi Bishop.
The past two years have been challenging for everyone. It is important to continuously look at where we were and where we are now and have hope and faith for what lies ahead of us all. Although we did not know that COVID would affect us two years later, we cannot play victim to the pandemic. In order for us to be visitors in this time and space, we hold on tight to our history and genealogy and move with the ʻike that will help us persevere and be resilient. We have a charge and kuleana to uphold this vision and mission of our kula. It is done through our actions of pono and aloha.
Be in the present. E makaʻala - be alert! Take advantage of the opportunities that our kūpuna have given and shared with us. Being part of Kamehameha Schools and the legacy of Pauahi, take advantage of what this school has to offer you, whether it be visual arts, performing arts, athletics, language, science, construction, or yearbook, amongst the plethora of programs and activities made available for our haumāna that will help you propel yourself on the pathway that you choose for yourself beyond high school.
