Yearbook Manaʻo from Poʻokumu Lehua
While pondering, I came across a reading by Aunty Nāhele in 1986, a book on Pauahi. What jumped out at me was Pauahi was not only about academics, her social status, or her physical being, for she was such a beautiful woman, but instead, she was very spiritual and land-based. People who knew her considered her the "Child of Promise." In this current generation, you need to have a plan and goals for the future. We are here to help each student through high school, continuing to college, and the workforce with the hope that you will also become the "Child of Promise." Doing it not only for yourself but for your ʻohana, for your community, and lastly for your lāhui.
"Being mindful of who they are and where they come from." I have never forgotten in the thirty-plus years of teaching, either at the D.O.E, Immersion, or Charter schools and at this school. We, as kanaka, it is our kuleana to be aware of where you come from, especially as a "Child of Promise." You're moving and propelling yourself forward, knowing that you are a representative of a family, community, school, and lāhui. To become a child of promise means that you respect and honor the legacy that you come from, not just the legacy of our school but also at home and in the community. It is my hope that people understand that you carry your whole moʻokūʻauhau and history upon your shoulders in order for you to move forward.
