In 1985, Steven Avery was convicted of a sexual assault. He maintained his evidence and eventually had his conviction overturned when DNA testing exonerated him in 2003. He subsequently sued the county, district attorney, and sheriff for $36 million for wrongful conviction. As his civil suit was progressing, a woman named Teresa Halbach went missing in 2005. She was believed to have last been seen on Avery's property as she was there to photograph a van for an Auto Trader listing. Evidence, including remains, were eventually found on his property, leading Avery and his nephew to be arrested for her murder. Despite the evidence, Avery still says he didn't have anything to do with her disappearance or murder.
