In 2004, 16-year-old Cyntoia Brown shot a man, Johnny Mitchell Allen, who had hired the teen as a prostitute. Cyntoia was tried as an adult on charges of first-degree murder and then sentenced to life in prison. Cyntoia has always held true to her version of events, stating she only killed him in self-defense. Although, she was unable to get a new trial or have her conviction overturned, she was granted clemency and released on parole in 2019.
