In November 2001, Michael Peterson called police and told them he found his wife, Kathleen, dead at the bottom of the staircase. Initially, Peterson was found guilty of the murder in 2003; however, the evidence used against him was proven to be faulty, leading to a new trial in 2011 during which Peterson entered an Alford plea. This allowed him to plead guilty while still maintaining his innocence. He was sentenced to time served and released.
