Team 77278N competed this weekend at a qualification tournament for the State Competition this Saturday.
The robot didn't immediately pass inspection. It was a little too wide, and a little too long. This is always a cause for stress, because cutting things out or shrinking things down affects the robot's overall performance.
Isaac and the other students had to rush to make repairs as the tournament was proceeding. This is very stressful and difficult. Taking until the middle of the tournament to get the the robot was working smoothly.
By the middle of the tournament, on their two Skills matches, their robot did well, and at one point, they scored 91 points, which is the highest they had ever made (even in practice).
By their last two Alliance matches, another problem emerged and they had to pivot strategies and tried to make repairs, replacing the motors deep in the middle of the robot, it essentially was like open heart surgery, in the midst of a busy city street.
Despite not qualifying the States Team 77278N won the Build Award for a robot exhibited "robust and reliable design." Despite the challenges with the robot that day, Mr Otaka beleives they won based on their engineering design notebook and process. Mr. Otaka agrees it was well deserved it, because they exhibited a lot of grace under pressure, relentlessly trying to fix and improve their robot while doing the best driving that they could within their matches.
The team didn't do as well as we had hoped they would do. Ranking 13th out of 24 teams and 7th in Skills.
Mr Otaka wishes to really congratulate 77278N "King of Burgers" for a great season. A team made up of all first season students. This team has come a long way. A few months ago, it was inconceivable for them to build a Scorpion bot, but they did. They (as a team) overcame many obstacles, and tried a lot of different ideas to design this robot. They may not remember it, but they spent a lot of time working on the beam lifter for the robot, and creating all kinds of crazy scissor lift ideas... That was, no doubt, part of what earned them the "Build" award, because it showed them struggling and innovating. Even if they didn't use half of their ideas ultimately, this shows that they were willing to explore and be ambitious, and not just stick with the predictable and safe things.
Congratulations: Isaac Polak, Lamar Joshua, Liam Britten, Mary Bowler, Collin Schwartz, Ben Kirkland, Christopher Smith!
