Students in the Practicum in Health Science course of the Nursing Science program of study will have the opportunity to earn a Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) industry-based certification (IBC). The CNA is a credential that authorizes individuals to work as nurse aides in healthcare facilities, such as nursing homes, hospitals, and long-term care facilities.
To obtain this certification, candidates must complete a state-approved nurse aide training program,
which includes at least 100 hours of training (60 hours of class room instruction and 40 hours of clinical practice). After completing the training, candidates must pass the Texas Nurse Aide Competency Examination, which consists of a written (or oral) test and a skills evaluation. Successful candidates are then listed on the Texas Nurse Aide Registry, allowing them to work in various healthcare settings, such as nursing homes, hospitals, and long-term care facilities. The certification must be renewed every two years, requiring proof of employment as a nurse aide for at least eight hours within the past 24 months.
