Social Language Activity #1: School is Closed Social Narrative
Here's a social story to discuss with your child about school being closed and why we can not all be together right now.
How does that make them feel?
Share how you feel with them as well.
Make a plan to talk about their feelings and your feelings when something unexpected happens.
Let your SLP know what you discussed when you completed this activity.
Social Language Activity #2: Tommy is worried! He hasn't been able to see his friends or teacher for several weeks because we can't be at school right now to keep everyone safe.
Tell your family about a time you've been worried.
What are some strategies you've worked on with your SLP to help you with your worries?
What could you say to to someone who is worried to help them feel better?
Let your SLP know if you're feeling worried or doing OK. Let them know how things are going for you right now! Know that we miss you!
Social Language Activity #3: We work on learning about Expected vs. Unexpected Behaviors when targeting Social Skills. This sorting game will help your child identify which type of behavior is being described. Let your SLP know how the game went!
Social Language Activity #4: After practicing identification of Expected vs. Unexpected behaviors in others, it is a great time for the child to reflect on their own behaviors. Here is simple chart that can help them with identifying where their actions are fitting in. If they work on a chart, please share it with their SLP!
Social Language Activity #5:
A visual support can be very helpful to remind our students of the behavior. After practicing the Expected vs. Unexpected activities, print these visuals to use as a nonverbal reminder to help them do the expected. Let your SLP know if you found visual supports to be helpful! Are there other ways we can support your student at home?
Social Language Activity #6:
Use these picture and question cards to discuss these various social situations. Let you SLP know at least one of your responses!
