AAC Activity #1: Orient yourself to your child's communication device as much as possible. If you have questions, it's OK! Let your SLP know. You can also search for resources online. If your child does not use a device, discuss these topics with them verbally.
Start with the home screen. That's the page the device opens to.
Ask your child to show you where to find the color words. It's going to be important for Activity #2!
Explore an interest area of your child's that will help you communicate together at home. Foods, toys, animals, and feelings words are all great places to start. On each page, ask them for their favorite food, toy, animal, etc.
Be sure to tell them your favorites too!
Let your SLP know what questions you have and how we can best support your home AAC use while we are away from school.
Shoot us a message with feedback on if you were able to do this and how it went. Thanks to our families!
AAC Activity #2: Watch the Brown Bear, Brown Bear read along with your child and/or read the book with your child at home if you have it. Link to the video can be found below.
Highlight the color words on their communication device if they have one.
Model the words and see if your child can also say them with their speech or device.
Feel free to pause the video as you find the words. Take your time and have fun!
Afterwards, use your speech and the device to talk about the things you see around your home.
Ask your child what they see?
Email your child's SLP to let them know how this activity went. Thanks for your efforts!
AAC Activity #3: Hopefully we're going to be blessed with some beautiful Spring weather that is here to stay! Try taking your child on a walk with their talker! This visual provides some great language modeling ideas while you are out and about. If they aren't using a communication device, these are still excellent language topics you can discuss verbally as well. Be sure to snap a picture of your activity to send to your SLP!
AAC Activity #4: Model, model, model! Morning routines are a great time to work on language development. Check out this visual for some great ideas on phrases you can discuss on the talkers while getting going in the morning. Let us know how it goes!
AAC Activity #5: Here is a fun short story about Earth day! Read it together. Your student can help you read by using their talker to read the word 'can' on each page. When you're finished reading, discuss on the talkers different topics like: what we can do to help the Earth stay clean; what animals we help when we keep the earth clean; what we can recycle to help the Earth.
AAC Activity #6: Click Here for a book reading activity using the story, "Plant the Tiny Seed." Core words are highlighted on the pages of the story with visuals to match finding the words in the AAC devices.
AAC Activity #7: Try to think about core vocabulary at least a little bit each day! This calendar gives a daily activity to assist you during the month of May.
AAC Activity #8: Click here to read The Very Hungry Caterpillar using our LAMP Words For Life AAC app! If you don't use LAMP, see if you can find some of the words on your device too.
