“Adolescence is a period of life with specific health and developmental needs and rights. It is also a time to develop knowledge and skills, learn to manage emotions and relationships, and acquire attributes and abilities that will be important for enjoying the adolescent years and assuming adult roles.” (World Health Organization, 2020).
At JIS Middle School, we believe that every student has the right to learn in a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment. Every day, students make choices about how they engage with their learning, treat others, care for their environment, and contribute to our community. These choices matter. As students grow in independence, they are expected to take increasing responsibility for their actions and understand that their decisions have an impact on themselves and those around them.
Supporting students to become responsible, compassionate, and respectful young people is a shared responsibility between students, families, and school staff. By working together, we create a consistent and supportive environment in which students are encouraged to develop sound judgement, strong character, and the confidence to make positive choices. Open communication and mutual trust between home and school are essential to this partnership.
Our goal is for every student to embrace the JIS values and make positive contributions through their interactions with peers, teachers, staff, and the wider community while representing JIS. We recognise that adolescence is a time of rapid growth, increasing independence, and developing decision-making skills. As students learn and mature, mistakes are inevitable—and they are also valuable opportunities for learning. Our role as educators and parents is not to expect perfection, but to guide students as they develop the skills needed to navigate challenges, repair harm when necessary, and make better choices in the future.
Middle school students are developing the executive functioning skills that enable them to plan ahead, organise themselves, regulate emotions, manage impulses, and make thoughtful decisions. These skills continue to mature throughout adolescence. Because of this, students benefit from clear expectations, consistent guidance, opportunities to practise responsible decision-making, and caring adults who support and challenge them along the way.
At JIS, we recognise that students develop at different rates. We encourage respect, empathy, responsibility, and an appreciation of individual differences so that every student can contribute positively to our community and reach their full potential.
Learning to make good decisions also means learning that our choices have consequences. At JIS, we believe consequences are opportunities for learning rather than simply punishment. When students make poor choices, we work with them to understand what happened, reflect on the impact of their actions, take responsibility, repair relationships where appropriate, and identify strategies for making better choices in the future.
Whenever possible, we use natural and logical consequences. Natural consequences occur as a direct result of an action, while logical consequences are thoughtfully designed by teachers and administrators to be related, respectful, and reasonable. This approach helps students develop accountability, resilience, and the decision-making skills they will need throughout life.
When behavioural concerns arise, teachers, counsellors, administrators, students, and families work together to support student growth. Incidents are documented and addressed in accordance with school-wide and Middle School procedures. The expectations outlined in the following pages provide clarity about the behaviours that help ensure our school remains a safe, respectful, and productive learning environment where every student can thrive.
