At JIS, we believe strongly that our mission is to help create people who are not only best in what they aspire for, but who will be "Best for the world". Of course, in order to achieve this a key part of our curriculum and community culture must relate to environmental education and sustainable living.
Students need an interdisciplinary education that instills respect for the planet and inspires action to protect it. In our classrooms, we can weave environmental themes throughout all subjects to encourage a critical, systems approach to the world. We aim to arm our students with a critical understanding of how the natural world works around us, and the ability to analyze how we are connected to natural and social systems around us. Gaining critical thinking, as well as practical physical skills, will enable individuals to effectively act on behalf of the Earth.
The next generation will inherit a complicated world, and we are obliged to give them the skills they need to create equitable solutions and build hope for a brighter future.
Our JIS, "Choose to Refuse" campaign was developed in collaboration with our students, as a rallying call for the entire JIS extended community to take action. This action occurs both through personal choices and through spreading awareness to others in the community of the environmental and social impacts of their choices.
Beginning smaller, with a passionate group advocating a "Skip the Straw" campaign and banning single-use straws from our campus, the campaign and goals have expanded to now promoting the elimination of all single-use plastics on our campus as well as in our personal homes. We are not perfect and still have challenges to overcome, but this campaign keeps our stewardship goals and passions at the forefront of our minds throughout the year.

JIS Middle School has fully committed to embracing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG's) as an anchor for our sustainability education. All classroom subjects, ESP, trips, and even many school activities connect with the SDG's and use them to help give context to topics being explored.
In moving towards our mission of being a community serving as environmental custodians for a sustainable future, the SDG's help us create concrete, actionable goals.
JIS Environment Day celebrations in the MS. The semester 1 Environment day is celebrated with a lunch eco-fair, including student information booths and games, live performances, nature dances and activity lessons.
Each year for the semester 1 Environment Day, the Middle School community makes pledges to help us reach our goal of becoming greater stewards of our environment. We strive to achieve those goals throughout the school year and revisit them on Earth Day in April.
During the school year, students have many opportunities to explore and grow their passion for environmental stewardship outside of the classroom. Clubs such as the STEAM Girls, Animal Welfare club and Penguin Patrol run annually, focusing on students taking direct action to better understand the impact of our school on the environment and work towards improving it.
Our clubs also work towards creating change alongside service organizations to not only improve our campus ecological footprint but also to help the larger Indonesian community. Several optional service trips throughout the year, such as the weekend volunteer trip to the Cikananga Wildlife Centre give students hands-on practical experience in what organizations must do to help protect the biodiversity of Indonesia.
Serving as environmental custodians for a sustainable future in a priority in the MS, and we are always looking for new opportunities to create meaningful change with our students. If a student is passionate about a particular topic and wishes to propose a new club or eco-service trip, we are always open to these ideas!
