Q: How do I check my schedule?
A: Your schedule is online in Powerschool and your counselor can help you learn how to check it. Once the semester has begun it will also appear in your Google calendar. Powerschool is always the most accurate.
Q: I think I am in the wrong level in my language class. Who should I see to straighten this out?
A: First check with your teacher. If she or he agrees, you will be directed to your counselor. Preference for a certain teacher or group of friends is no reason for seeking a schedule change.
Q: Do I have an assigned locker?
A: Students do not have assigned lockers but there are electronic day lockers that you can use for bags and valuables. You shouldn’t leave valuables unattended anywhere on campus.
Q: What should I do if I my property is lost or missing?
A: Check in the places where you think you last saw the item. Check the lost and found in the MS office. Complete a missing or stolen items form in the MS Office or Checkpoint including all the details you can remember. Security will then investigate the report and try to locate the item. In the meantime if you find your property please let the MS office know. Be careful with your belongings. Do not leave your property unattended.
Q: What do I do about this person who bugs me by calling me names, and generally making my life miserable?
A: Talk privately with your teachers oryour counselor about the problem. If this doesn’t help, don’t hesitate to see the MS Associate Principal or your school counselor. There are people here to help solve this kind of problem. Remember, if someone is being mean to you, chances are that it is happening to others as well. It is important that this sort of behavior be stopped.
Q: What should I do if I my homework is taking too long?
A: Check with your classroom teacher. If things seem to be getting too much to handle, he or she may be able to suggest ways to budget your time better. Maybe a few minutes’ help from your teacher in organizing your work or explaining directions would ease the burden. If that does not help, the counselor will provide assistance. Remember, we are all in this together. Let’s talk!
Q: I feel sick and I think I have a fever. Can I see the nurse?
A: Sure. Just ask your teacher for permission, then proceed to the Nurse’s Hut. If you are too ill to attend classes, a nurse will give your parents a call to let them know the problem. So that we know where students are you must go through the MS office to check-out before you can leave campus, please don’t just call your driver and go home.
Q: I am kind of shy and not so good at sports. What activities are there for me?
A: There are many After-School Activities for you. You can join a club, help out backstage for the school play. There are also activities available in the community. Check with Ms. Cleary in the MS (Activities) Office to see what is currently available or if you want to start your own club.
Q: What should I do about schoolwork when I am ill?
A: Have your parent or guardian contact the MS Office to explain your illness and how long you will be absent. Contact your teachers via email. Do what you can and check in with your teachers when you return to see what you have missed. Of course, if you are seriously ill, you may have to wait until you return to school and catch up. Please remember that it is your responsibility as a student to contact your teachers to arrange for make-up work and take any tests that you have missed.
Q: We just found out that we will be leaving Jakarta in two weeks. What must I do to withdraw from school?
A: Have your parents or guardian contact JIS Admission to begin the withdrawal process. We will notify your teachers. You will be reminded before your last day to pick up a Withdrawal/Clearance Form from the MS Office. Your counselor will give you assistance in taking the right steps.
Q: My family is leaving for holiday or home leave a few days before the end of the first semester. What should I do about missing classes?
A: We discourage student absences for this purpose. If this is unavoidable for some reason, parents and students must understand that we cannot always supply work to be done in advance. There may be classroom activities and culminating projects that cannot be made up at all. IMPORTANT: Students need to go to the office and see their counselor and get a absent form which will need to be signed by all their teacher prior to departure.
Q: My parents will be out of town for a few days. I will be staying with friends. Does the school need to know?
A: Yes. Your parents must complete a Parent Absence Notification Form which includes the contact details of your Guardian while your parents are away. These are available on the JISnet. It is very important that we have this information in case of an emergency.
Q: I am not really in any activities after school. Can I just hang around and wait for my friends on the swim team while they practice?
A: If you have a legitimate school sponsored activity after school or if you are studying in the library, you are welcome to stay on campus. Otherwise, you must leave campus at the end of the regular school day. Students waiting for community sports activities must be in the library, cafeteria, or a designated club. Students may not just “hang around” after school.
Q: I have a friend visiting from out of town. Can they spend time here at school?
A: Yes. Please fill out this form 3 days in advance of the visit. Visiting Student Application Form.
This form is to be filled out by the JIS student, not the visiting student. Please complete this form to apply for permission to visit. Once we receive your application we will respond as soon as possible and confirm with the visiting student's parent/guardian.
REQUEST MUST BE COMPLETED 3 DAYS BEFORE THE DAY OF VISIT
A STUDENT IS ONLY ALLOW ONE VISITOR AT A TIME.
A VISITING STUDENT MAY ONLY ATTEND SCHOOL 2 TIMES IN ANY GIVEN WEEK.
STUDENTS MUST CHECK INTO THE OFFICE BY 7:15 AM ON THE DAY OF THE VISIT
Q: Who should I inform if I keep my child home because of illness?
A: Please contact the Attendance Officer in the MS Office. If you wish to request assignments, please contact your child’s house teacher or their counselor.
Q: What if the bus doesn’t come?
A: Please contact the Transportation Office (ext 72835). They will make arrangements for assistance or provide necessary information. The transportation system is very reliable and efficient.
Q: What if my child is having problems on the bus?
A: Please contact your child’s counselor or the Associate Principal as soon as possible. Our MS students ride buses without bus chaperones. The drivers concentrate on driving. We rely upon student feedback, both from HS and MS students, as to what conditions exist on buses. If your child is having a problem, we must hear about the problems sooner rather than later.
Q: How do I pick my child up early from school?
A: Students must be signed out with the Attendance Officer in the MS Office. If a parent or guardian cannot sign out the student in person, the MS Office must be notified before the student is allowed to sign out.
Q: What do I do if my child is having difficulties in a class?
A: Most importantly, contact the teacher. In addition, do not hesitate to speak with your child’s counselor. Be proactive and recognize that parents are expected to advocate for their child.
Q: We’re leaving JIS. What is the withdrawal procedure?
A: Please contact JIS admissions office to begin the process. Your child will be given a Withdrawal/Clearance Form to gather signatures from various teachers, the library, the Business Office, and MS Office. Once this form is returned, your child’s records can be released. Your child’s counselor will assist them with this process.
Q: What do I do if my child needs medication during the day?
A: School policy generally requires that all medication be distributed through the Nurse’s Office. Please consult the Health Services section in this handbook for more information.
Q: How can I help out?
A: There are many opportunities for parents to volunteer at school and in the community. A few examples are: PTA committees and events, D’Toko, and the Booster Hut. Please contact the Parent Volunteer Organization (pvo@jisedu.or.id) for more information.
Q: If there is a family emergency, how do parents contact their children?
A: Parents should contact their child through the Associate Principal or a counselor.
Q: What if an emergency situation occurs in Jakarta?
A: JIS maintains a well-defined set of emergency procedures. These procedures have been tested in various situations in the past. Depending upon the nature of the emergency, our Parent Notification System may be utilized. This system relies upon parents alerting other parents based upon notification from the school.
