The GK mission is to break the cycle of poverty by empowering communities. GK stands for Gerakan Kepedulian- Care Movement. The middle school works in partnership with the high school GK Club members to develop activities for visits to the 3 local communities we serve, as well as visits from those community children to our campus during our service club time.
The GK club continues to try to expand the number of site visits made each year, further engaging JIS students with the communities we work with. This is a rewarding organization, providing the opportunity to form lifelong friendships while helping to improve the lives of children in our Jakarta communities.
In Sekolah Sabit club we have fun and make a difference in the lives of our Indonesian neighbors! Sekolah Sabit is a small school tucked away in the alleyway next to JIS set up to provide access to education for local children. Members of this club plan and lead fun activities for these young children when they visit the JIS campus, (Ex: Outdoor games; Arts & Crafts, etc.), and during online learning plan and create fun activities that can be delivered remotely to these children.
Recycling paper conserves resources, saves energy, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and frees up space in landfills. Our fun, easily identifiable penguin recycling system was developed by, and continues to be run by, middle school students. Let’s keep calm and continue recycling paper!
Strings in Action club works with the children of Pondok Taruna in order to enhance their love for music and provide instruments and instruction to those who might not otherwise have access. We hold weekly visits focused on teaching children of varying ages string instruments, to help them build their own orchestra. Together with the sister HS club and the students of Pondok Taruna, we put on concerts for the community to enjoy. Performing together builds further links between our communities and a shared sense of pride. Find out more about our foundation here.
Steam Girls is a club for young women to explore environmental and social issues they care about, through a combination of science and art. Members investigate and work on environmental art in many forms, conduct experiments exploring the effects of pollution and other environmental variants, and use art to spread awareness of chosen issues within the school and community. If you like art, science and making a difference, this is the club for you!
The Animal Welfare club focuses on animal conservation n our community, and what we as a school community can do to help. One of the main groups of animals they focus on is the cat population on our JIS campus. Health care for the cats on campus is a constant challenge that this club works to meet. Meeting this challenge includes identification, vaccination, and other health care services. Public service announcements for students and fundraising for care are also a part of the club mission.
During the school year our MS students have opportunities to enrich their service learning through off-campus trips. These trips enable students to connect directly with members of our host country communities, and to see first hand the issues facing our country. These trips are unforgettable experiences and provide great perspective to our students, while providing needed resources and assistance to local organisations and communities.
