What We Value...
As an inclusive Middle School, we value the balance between learning, extracurricular opportunities, and home life. Extra-curricular activities at JIS are numerous and provide children with a range of experiences to enhance their growth and development. Further, Middle School students should also have time for quality interactions with family and friends.
As an inclusive Middle School, we value differentiation. We understand that students may require different amounts of time to complete any given assignment. The amount of time a student spends on homework on any given night depends on their choice of courses, learning profile, and time management skills.
The majority of student learning takes place during the school day. When homework is required, teachers will ensure that the homework allows for student choice, differentiation, and balance.
Homework may be assigned when:
• Students are developing skills that require additional practice.
• Students are preparing for upcoming assessments or performance projects.
Guiding Principles:
Homework can be done independently.
Homework directions are clearly stated in Google Classroom (ask your child for access).
Homework is differentiated and based on the individual needs of the learner.
Teachers will communicate home if there is a consistent pattern of missed or incomplete homework.
Homework is not to be used as punishment, behavior management, or a means of motivation.
Departments will articulate agreed-upon homework expectations that align with the MS Homework Values and are approved by the administration.
The Assessment Calendar will be used by all departments for assessments, projects, and performance assessments.
Holiday and Weekend Agreements:
Homework will not be assigned during school Red Letter days or breaks.
Homework and assessments will not be due the first class after a red-letter day or break.
Students are not expected to do homework on the weekend (Saturday/Sunday).
Pre-Arranged Absences:
All students are required to complete a Pink Form if they will miss two or more days of school. Pink forms are located in the MS Office.
Family-Initiated Absences: Students will communicate with their teachers directly to create a plan to make up any missed homework or assessments. This may look different for each student.
School-Initiated Absences: Students are not expected to do homework while participating in school events such as ISTA, AMIS, sports tournaments, etc. Any missed work or assessments will not be due or scheduled on the first day following a school trip. Students are expected to communicate with teachers upon return and complete any missed learning.
Teachers will coordinate assessments to minimize the number of conflicting assessments on any one day. Students should not responsible for more than two major assessments on the same day.
Details of the homework students typically get is written below. For additional homework tasks please see the parent/guardian emails from Google Classroom.
All Middle School teachers and students will be using Google Classroom as their Learning Management system.
Parents do not have direct access to Google Classroom.
Instead, parents are able to sign up for Google Classroom Guardian Summaries which are daily or weekly emails that help parents stay informed about a child's out of class requirements and assignments. Parents are automatically added as a Google Classroom Guardian. Once your email is in the system you can choose to get daily or weekly summaries. These email summaries are just to keep you informed and are a conversation starter with your child. If at anytime you have questions about what is in a Google Classroom Guardian Summary email, please have your child login to Google Classroom with you before contacting the teacher.
Teachers will be posting any homework requirements on this webpage below in addition to posting it via Google Classroom. If you are not receiving any email Classroom Summaries, please email the MS Tech Coach at mmatias@jisedu.or.id to put you into the system.
