Technology for Students
In JIS Middle School, students will get more privileges, opportunities for independence and along with it, increased responsibilities. Students will be responsible for their homework, keeping up to date with their school schedule, and communicating with their teachers and parents regularly.
But don’t worry, we are here to help! JIS MS has several online tools that will help students to become successful in their learning. When used appropriately, technology is an incredible tool that could transform creativity, productivity, communication and collaboration skills.
When students use technology at JIS, it means that they agree to our Acceptable Use Agreement. They are expected to:
Be their best self online and offline
Be responsible for their devices and school accounts.
Stay safe and secure with their personal information.
Show kindness and respect, both online and offline.
Student Macbook Device
Students should have already received their laptop during the New Family Tech Orientation with IT Support and Miss Michelle. They also will have done the following:
Received their laptop and charger.
Watched the Orientation video and signed the Responsible Use Agreement.
Signed in to their Macbook for the first time and changed their password.
Logged in to JISNet and Powerschool for the first time.
Accessed their Gmail for the first time.
Learned about the other Core Communication tools that we use in MS: Calendar, Classroom, JISNet's MS Naga News Feed
Understood the Technology Expectations in MS.
Summer Maintenance
Middle School students will return their laptops to the JIS IT department in June at the end of each school year. The IT team will perform maintence on students' laptops and provide update to software.
In order for the summer updates to happen with minimal interruptions to students' files and class work students will to complete the following steps:
Log out of iCloud on your JIS MacBook (see instructions here)
Back up your harddrive data (data stored on JIS Chrome and google drive will be maintained). See here for how to back up your Mac files to Google Drive.
Provide your JISnet password to the IT team (a separate form will be provided for this). Passwords will be reset by students in the first advisory of the school year.
IMPORTANT: Students who do not provide JISNet passwords will have passwords reset by IT, meaning students will NOT have access to JISNet, PowerSchool, Gmail or your Google Drive over the summer.
Laptops can be returned with or without covers (this will be checked). Please include the laptop charger.
Communications
Note: For new students, relevant tutorials can be viewed in the Beginning of the School Year page in the Middle School's Tech Hub. Please visit this page AFTER you have read all the information here. :-)
JISNet is our community-only portal. Sign in to JISNet to view the latest MS announcements in MS Naga News Feed, and to access online tools such as PowerSchool, Gmail and more.
Gmail is the email service that we use at JIS. Students must check their email on a daily basis for any messages from their teachers.
Google Calendar is a huge part of our culture in the MS. Everyone's schedule is automatically uploaded into one's JIS calendar. This enables easy planning with their peers and teachers. They will also be expected to subscribe to several school calendars so they can view the latest events at JIS.
Google Classroom is our virtual learning environment. Their teachers will invite the students to join Classroom so they can access resources, homework and other information that are relevant to their subjects. Their parents are also subscribed to Classroom so they too, will receive notifications when there's new/missing homework.
Power School (PS) is our Student Information System. Think of PS as an open gradebook - students must sign in here to access their grades at any time. The report card will be displayed here twice per year. Parents will also have access to their child's report cards and any homework that their teacher has posted in PS. Please remember that the grades that students see will not be final until the end of every semester or when their teacher confirms the end of grading period.
Having access to grades at all times means that students will be responsible for checking if they have completed all their projects and assignments, and if there are missing work that they have yet to submit. They will also be in charge of sharing and explaining their learning to their parents. If they have any questions about their grades, respectfully ask the teacher for clarification.
Google Workspace
Perhaps the core of all we do with technology in the Middle School is the Google Workspace, as teachers and students love the simplicity and ability to easily share and collaborate on documents with your peers and instructors in real time. Middle School students will need to become familiar with the following applications:
Tech Expectations
Managing Screen Time
Digital devices dominate our day-to-day life, and it is important that we find ways to maintain a healthy balance between screen time and other offline activities. To this end, we have designated offline periods during the school day. Students will not be allowed to do any digital gaming, use cell phones or laptops during lunch, breaks and assemblies unless under the supervision of a teacher. Teachers will determine when computers or other devices are used in the classrooms.
Social Media
Here at JIS, we use social media to celebrate the best of our community. We share content about school events, school publications and student work, to name a few. We believe that when it is used appropriately, it can promote authentic learning, foster creative expression and collaboration with a wider global learning community.
The Digital Sharing and Privacy Policy (see below) sets expectations for online contributions in accordance with our JIS values. Please read our policy carefully. As always, we remind students, teachers and community members to think before posting.
