Dear Brown School Family,
Please mark your calendars for our annual Thanksgiving Lunch - see the information below in the PTSA section. Our PTSA leaders have worked with our nutrition staff to divide it up across two days in order to help with the congestion. Please remember that all visitors/volunteers must enter our school through our Welcome Center at Door #2 on S. First Street, and then proceed through our weapons detection system prior to signing in. All adult visitors must present a state-issued ID and be listed as a student's contact in Infinite Campus, be accompanied by a contact/guardian, or have verified written permission from a guardian.
On Friday, November 21st we are having our 3rd Annual Multicultural Fair, Assembly, and our 2nd Parade of Nations! This is a student organized and implemented endeavor! Thank you so much to our Asian Student Association for taking on this important event. We will be live streaming the Parade of Nations on our Facebook page if you would like to watch it. We are unable to accommodate in-person visitors during the program due to the capacity limits of our auditorium. Thank you for your understanding.
Love,
Dr. Angela

We’re excited for our Brown School Fall Lock-In, a beloved tradition for students in grades 9–12!
Students will spend the night at school, hanging out with friends in the gym and lobby areas (upper floors will be closed). They can bring:
Tents (must be visible inside)
Gaming systems, board games, or card games
Inflatable mattresses, blankets, and snacks
Additional details:
Separate designated sleeping areas for boys and girls.
Students may leave early if picked up by a parent or guardian.
Late arrivals must have prior permission from the supervising adult
A permission slip and $20 fee (at the door) are required; proceeds support Prom 2026.
Permission Slips will be available in room 328 starting next week.
We’re also looking for adult chaperones with current background checks. If you’d like to volunteer for part or all of the night, please contact Dr. Kat (kathleen.mattingly@jefferson.kyschools.us)— we’d love your help!
The goal of the Lock-In is to have fun, build community, and enjoy time together in our “second home.”
Thanks!
The Lost and Found located in the first floor stairwell across from the Main Office is overloaded with lunchboxes, coats, water bottles, etc. Anything left after Tuesday, November 25th will be donated to the community. If your child is missing something, please remind them to check the Lost and Found.
Thanks!

Elementary Basketball- Great news! Practice will begin next week. We are sending out a practice schedule on Thursday night and this includes a second tryout for the boys team. JCPS basketball season begins in January. We are going to use Brecknridge Metro High School (1128 E Broadway, 40204) for our elementary school practice facility.
Tryouts- The girls team is set and will begin practice when we get access to the gym at Breck Metro- with the low numbers that tried out, all girls made the team. The boys will have a second tryout to accommodate those who were not able to attend the first.

If you are interested in mental health services for your student outside of the school setting, we are able to make referrals for you through Care Solace. If you are interested in my services with your student to start off the school year please reach out to me via the student support form and I will be happy to talk with you and find the best services for your student. I am hoping to do more groups this year, so if you have an idea that you think would benefit your child feel free to reach out!
In addition, I am holding the second annual Brown School Mental Health Fair on December 12 (12/12)! It will be a great opportunity for our students to meet local mental health providers, as well as organizations that are beneficial to mental health. We're excited to invite the Louisville Free Public Library, the YMCA, as well as the Louisville Science Center among several other groups to participate. This will be a great chance to find out what resources are available for your students, and we would love for parents to come and participate as well. Keep an eye out for more details as the event comes closer!

Today from 3-4 I will host our 3rd Counselor Conversation. This one is specifically for 8th grade parents. The main topic will be how to apply to high school and we will hear from a representative from the Office of School Choice. We will also talk about ways to prepare your child for high school and start the beginning stages of prepping for the 8th grade dance. Use this form to RSVP.
I'm also looking for donations of stress balls and three prong folders with pockets. We use the stress balls in our student support center and the folders come in handy for our daily advisory lessons. If you can help out just drop the items off in the welcome center. Thanks so much!
The band has started our second fundraiser of the year, a calendar sponsor a day fundraiser, to cover our spring trips. If you would like to donate you can ask your student for their specific link, or use the one here.

We have some exciting art classes coming up at Metro Arts Community Center!
This Friday, 11/14, we are hosting a closing show for the art that has been on display in our gallery for the past month. Micheal Mahar is a very talented woodcrafter, with some absolutely beautiful woodcarving! I know this may overlap with the school day a little, but I still wanted to share in case families or teachers did have the opportunity to come by and support a local artist! The show is from 11:30-2:30 pm.
Personal De-Zines is a class encouraging individuality in creativity; participants will make their own personal magazine (a zine), using found objects (like in a collage) and their own art. Zines can cover topics from pets to a vacation, and outfits to original characters and stories! This is a free ongoing class on Monday nights, for ages 8 and up.
Light Up! Ceramic Christmas Tree Painting is a fun class for the whole family. Individuals from ages 8 and up can register to glaze a vintage style ceramic Christmas tree, and we will fire it here at the center. Younger children are welcome to paint a tree with their adult’s help. We have multiple sessions available throughout November and early December! Registration comes with a single tree, as well as the lights to decorate it.
3D Print a Gift for the Holidays is a set of classes that demonstrate the process of 3D printing! Each class should be signed up for individually, and has a different theme. Staff at the center will assist participants with designing an object, from vases to 3D photos, which we will then print out.
Holiday Embroidery is a beginner friendly hand-embroidery class for ages 10 and up. The goal of the class is to create a small projected that can be incorporated into any kind of winter décor.
One Night Exploration: Holiday Cards is an all ages class, focusing on making cards for the season. Participants will have access to a variety of supplies, including a cricut tool, so this one is perfect for families!
One Night Exploration: Winter Pottery Paint is another one that is designed for the whole family. All ages will have the opportunity to glaze a ceramic object themed to the season, and then pick up their completed piece after they’ve been fired in our kiln!
Urban Wear Handbags is an upcycling class taught at the Douglass Community Center, and will give participants the opportunity to learn how to make different kind of bags to suit their needs! This class is for ages 12+. This class begins tomorrow, 11/12, but late enrollments will absolutely be accepted!
Needle Felting: Ornaments is a class that just went up on our website, but I wanted to share it anyway. This is a beginner friendly class where participants will learn how to make both 2D and 3D needle felted ornaments perfect for any holiday. The class is available for ages 14 and up!
