Dear Brown School Family,
On July 1st I celebrated my 10th anniversary as our school's principal! I feel that being a part of the Brown School Family just gets better year after year! This summer, our PTSA had our atrium concrete refinished, and it looks fantastic - this area is going to be a wonderful place for students! Furthermore, we are currently in the process of having two sets of alarmed doors moved so that our students who are unable to use the stairs due to a medical condition can access the elevator independently. Additionally, thanks to the support of the JCPS Operations Department, we are ordering an electric gym divider so that more classes/athletic teams can utilize our gymnasium.
Also this year, we are lucky that our school's budget allowed us to add two additional full-time teaching positions this year. As a result, we are able to offer several new classes. Our 6th and 7th graders will be able to enroll in American Sign Language, 7th graders and above can take Sci-Fi Literature, and high school students will be able to enroll in Civil Rights in America. We were also able to add additional sections of popular classes such as AP Psychology.
This summer, I attended the KY Reads to Succeed conference with many of our Brown School teachers as well as my husband, Teddy Parsons, who teaches 2nd grade at Norton Commons Elementary. It was a great day of learning more about the science of reading and how to support effective literacy practices in our classrooms.
If you know of anyone who would be willing to help us with renovating the cabinets and counter top in our Staff Workroom and Lounge, please let me know. The cabinets (see photo) are nearly 100 years old; they don't open/close well and they are an eyesore. I would love for our faculty and staff to be able to enjoy an area that would better suit their needs.
Please make sure you have familiarized yourself with our Back to School page on our website. Teacher assignments for elementary students will be shared at the Meet & Greet. I'm excited about seeing everyone back!
Love,
Dr. Angela
Hi, I’m Maggie Crain, and I’m so excited to be joining the Brown School community as the new 6th and 11th-grade Chemistry teacher!
As a Louisville native who attended Brown School for elementary and then Manual for high school, it’s truly wonderful to be coming back to my roots. After high school, I attended Oberlin College to study Neuroscience and English. From there, my passion for teaching took me to a boarding school in western Massachusetts. I taught 11th-grade Biology and 9th-grade Health, and was an advisor for 11th-grade girls. During that time, I also got my Master of Science in Education from the University of Pennsylvania, where I researched creativity and personal connections with science. Most recently, I’ve been in New York City teaching 7th and 8th-grade Physical and Life Science.
Outside of school, you can usually find me trying out new recipes, doing yoga, reading, or seeing live music. I’m thrilled to return to Kentucky and work with your students!
Hello! My name is Reed Davis and I am really excited about the opportunity to work with the students and staff at J. Graham Brown School. A bit about me… I graduated from the University of Louisville in 2010 with a Bachelor's degree in Health and Human Performance and a concentration in PE and Health Education. From there, I decided to go straight into my MAT program and received my Master’s degree in 2011. I worked at Highland Middle School as a coach (basketball and soccer) from 2010-2012 and as an Instructor III for the 2011-2012 school year. I then decided to start my own strength and conditioning company called FITology. I have trained athletes (former and present) and everyday people for the last 13 years. I have held multiple certifications over the last decade such as a CSCS (Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach), CPT (Certified Personal Trainer) through the NSCA, USAW-1 (Olympic Weightlifting level 1 Coach), Olympic Safe Sport Certification and more. I have competed in state olympic weightlifting meets and at one point, I was one of the top lifters in the Masters division in the state of Kentucky. I have also completed multiple Triathlons and enjoy trail running. My education and experiences give me the ability to coach and instruct effectively while also being empathetic to the challenges of physical movement. I love to teach and coach, it's what I was meant to do! When I am not teaching, I am spending time with my 3 wonderful kids exploring nature, fishing wherever we can, and playing whatever the moment entails. I have quite a few houseplants, enjoy a well made cappuccino and like to read and learn anything science related.
I am pumped to have a productive school year at Brown!
I am honored to join the English Department and become a member of the Brown School community. I recently earned my Ph.D. in English at the University of Louisville, where my study focused on writing pedagogy and media literacy. Before returning to graduate school, I taught middle and high school English for over a decade. These experiences have fueled my commitment to teaching practices that empower students through meaningful tasks that apply beyond the classroom.
Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my family. I met my partner, Aaron, in the College of Education at the University of Louisville, and we now have three wonderful children—Max (9), Sebastian (6), and Theodor (2). As a family, we hike, play board games, and watch lots of movies. When I have time to myself, I love to bake and catch up on podcasts.
I’m excited to meet and work with everyone this year at the J. Graham Brown School!
I am thrilled to introduce myself as the new Middle and High School Social Studies teacher at The J. Graham Brown School for the upcoming 2025-2026 school year!
I bring four years of valuable experience from WEB DuBois Academy, where I taught 8th and 9th grade Social Studies, English I and II, Film Studies, and AP Seminar, and implemented an Afrocentric curriculum. I originally grew up on the West Coast, but moved to Louisville for my college education, earning both my Bachelor of Arts in English and History and my Master of Arts in Teaching from Bellarmine University. I quickly fell in love with the vibrant community and rich history of Louisville and decided to make it my home.
I am deeply passionate about fostering inquiry, strong writing, and Project-Based Learning in all the courses I teach and am eager to empower students to explore complex ideas and articulate their understanding effectively through their writing.
In my spare time, I enjoy reading (with favorite authors including Jeanette Winterson, George Saunders, Toni Morrison, William Faulkner, and Yaa Gyasi), crafting, walking my dog, Michael, and playing trivia with my friends. My interest in history extends to exploring the mythology of the western frontier in early American history, as well as the complex history of the Balkan Region.
I am genuinely excited to be a part of the Brown Community and cannot wait for the 2025-2026 school year!
Hi! My name is Susan Lucke. I am excited to be joining the Brown family and providing speech therapy for students. Although I am new to Brown, I have been a speech therapist for nine years! I have worked in adult rehab and the hospital settings until last year.
I am a proud JCPS alum. I graduated from Ballard High School in 2005. I then went on to earn my bachelor's degree in Music Therapy at Appalachian State University in North Carolina and a master’s degree in Communication Disorders at the University of Louisville.
In my time outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my family. My husband and I have a wild toddler, a dog, and a cat. I also love gardening, hiking, and biking. I am looking forward to beginning the school year and getting to know the awesome Brown team and families!
Hiya, I’m Matthew Schlicher (Slish-er) and I’m thrilled to be joining the Brown School. I’ll be teaching 9th grade physics, 7th grade science, and 9th grade Algebra I.
I’m originally from Columbus Ohio but moved to Louisville in 2010 after graduating from Kent State University. I’ve been with JCPS these last 15 years; Teaching primarily science at T. T. Knight M.S., Western M.S., and Fern Creek H.S. During that time, I’ve also received two masters degrees in Teacher Leadership and School Guidance Counseling.
On my off time I enjoy hiking and playing board games & Dungeons & Dragons with my wife and 3 kids (9, 12, and 15 years old).
My name is Jamie Tedesco. I have been teaching with JCPS for 10 years and am so excited to start my 11th year as a 4th grade teacher at the J. Graham Brown School! My twins have attended Brown since kindergarten and will be in fourth grade for the 2025-26 school year. I have a bachelor's degree in elementary education and a master's degree in K-12 Teacher Leadership, with a literacy endorsement. I have participated in many programs to help excel my teaching; like the Bellarmine Literacy Project and the LETRS program, that focuses on the science of reading. I am always growing in my education, and I look forward to bringing this knowledge with me to use and share at Brown. Outside of the classroom I am married, a kid mom, and a cat mom. I love music and am fascinated with insects. I became so fascinated with insects that I looked into a degree in entomology, often confused with etymology, the study of the origin and history of words (which is also a fascinating area to study). I look forward to all of the excited things to come at Brown.
