Identify all the anatomy of the sternum (including the different names for all 3 divisions, ribs and sternoclavicular joints through written questions, diagrams and on radiographs.

The sternocostal joint of the first rib is classified as:

The sternal angle corresponds to the vertebral level of:

T4-T5

The sternoclavicular joints are classified as:

diarthrodial

The sternocostal joint of the second through seventh ribs are classified as:

diarthrodial

Each clavicle articulates medially with which bony anatomy?

Manubrium

The manubrium contains the Juglar notch on its superior aspect and correlates with the sternal end of the clavicles.

2. Describe the sternal angle, state its vertebral level, and identify the structure that attaches to the sternal angle.

The sternal angle correlates with the vertebral level of T4-T5. The sternal angle articulates with the 2nd rib with the facet for costocartilage.

4. In addition to the body, identify 3 structures that attach to the manubrium.

The manubrium is the widest portion of the sternum. The Juglar notch is on the superior border of the manubrium. The clavicles, and first and second ribs all attach to the manubrium.

5. Identify the pairs of ribs that are considered true ribs and those that are considered false, and explain the reasons for each of these names.

The ribs of 1-7 directly attach to the sternum so they are called true ribs. The cartilage of ribs 8-12 do not attach directly to the sternum and they are called false ribs. These ribs borrow cartilage from another rib.

3. Describe the jugular notch, state its vertebral level and its location to the clavicles.

The Juglar notch is at the vertebral level of T2-T3 and is medial to the clavicles. Its on the superior border of the manubrium. Lies anterior to the space between the 2nd and 3rd thoracic vertebra.

6. Identify the pairs of ribs called floating ribs and explain the reasoning for this name.

Ribs 11 &12 are called floating ribs because they are attached only to the thoracic vertebrae, not to the sternum and they do not have cartilage at all.
