Subject: Reminder: ePortfolio Institute Kickoff & Workshop, this Friday, 8:30-3:00

Hello colleagues! 

A reminder that Friday is our kickoff to the ePortfolio Institute and FLC. Please dress comfortably. Bring any materials related to the ePortfolio course you will be teaching in the spring (syllabus, past course materials, etc.). If you have one, please bring a laptop or other device to work online.

A light breakfast will be served during check-in from 8:30-9:00.

In preparation for our workshop, please read the attached article by Randy Bass,

"Social Pedagogies for ePortfolio Practices: Principles for Design and Impact." 

Bass' article offers a short, insightful commentary on ePortfolio strategies to maximize student engagement and success.

A printed copy will be included in your workshop handouts.

Congratulations! 

You are invited to join the High-Impact Curricular Engagement, When Done Well: ePortfolio Institute and Faculty Learning Community. Our team in the Institute for Engaged Learning looks forward to working with you in the coming months.

The kickoff for the ePortfolio Institute is Friday, May 8, 2025, from 8:30-3:00. 

The program will be held in Hine Hall, Room 236. 

Attendance of the full-day event is required for participation in the Institute.

To accept participation in this program, please complete this form by no later than noon, Friday, May 1

The information on this form will also be used to process your $1,500 stipend paid monthly during the semester you integrate ePortfolios.

KICKOFF & WORKSHOP: Friday, May 8

Check-in and a light breakfast will be available beginning at 8:30 in the Institute for Engaged Learning, Hine Hall, Room 243.

As classes get started, the ePortfolio Team is here to support you and your ePortfolio work this semester.  Here are a few reminders and updates.

Use Canvas to Circulate Pre/Post ePortfolio Surveys

Weeks one and two are the prefect time to circulate the early-semester Student ePortfolio survey. Canvas assignments are a great option to get student to complete the survey.

Option to Test Drive the Survey: Feel free to click on and take the survey yourself as "test student" in "test course" to see what your students will see. We'll purge any "test" surveys.

Canvas Assignment Mock-Up: Feel free to copy/paste the activity, edit it, or build your own.

STUDENT SURVEY on ePORTFOLIOS: Please take four minutes to complete this survey to share your thoughts and experiences with technology and reflection. Then, take a screenshot or photo of your "completed survey" that states your response was recorded. Upload that photo into this assignment to verify that you completed the survey.

Schedule A Class Visit with the ePortfolio Team

Would you like someone from the ePortfolio team to visit your class? We can help your students open a technology and build their ePortfolio structure as well as copy/paste/insert an assignment they turn in to you by Canvas. Navigating the ePortfolio websites at IUI: The classroom kickoff request form is on the ePortfolio website. Go to the top right corner and click on faculty/staff. Then, the classroom kickoff button appears in the heading/photo area + is under the professional development tools.

The Engaged Learning & ePortfolio Showcase is getting updates!

The ePortfolio Showcase is available with over 1,400 entries. The DUE COMM team is working with settings and options, which will appear as updates across this semester

Please share the showcase link with your students. Ours is the largest, public-facing repository of college student ePortfolios that invites students to share work in any platform with a live URL.

You can use the Showcase search feature to find ePortfolios to share with your students. Seeing examples helps students better understand the range of options they have with ePortfolios. Here are some samples that help illustrate the ways students might use their ePortfolios differently:

• Megan: https://meganpalmquist-honors.vercel.app/#artifact3 - Megan used her ePortfolio highlight her emerging expertise as a web designer and interactive user/developer

• Roman: https://www.romanmoreno.com/home#aboutme - Roman used his Honors ePortfolio as a showcase to support his applications for law school and professional pursuits.

• Blair: https://sabacant.wixsite.com/mysite - Blair and her team partnered with Scouting America to help a local troop identify the best ways to communicate with their troop parents. They shared their recommendation report with SA through a project-focused ePortfolio.

ePortfolios are a flexible/adaptable way for your students to take ownership of their work and create/reflect on the engaging projects they tackle in your class. Then, they can link their portfolios to showcase career readiness skills that make them strong candidates for grad school and professional pursuits.

Use the Google Site to track things that are meaningful to your course/curriculum design and things you want IEL to know. You can even include the dates you circulate pre/post surveys as a way of tracking your grant progress. You can also use the Google Site to stash information for your FAR.

Thank you all for participating in our "When Done Well" ePortfolio Institute Kickoff/Workshop. It has been wonderful to work with you and see how you plan to incorporate ePortfolios into your class.

As part of the Institute, we watched two presentations from faculty who integrated/optimized ePortfolios the previous semester as they presented to our Community of Practice [COP]. You can NOW access the entire presentation, featuring other faculty, on our shared Google Sites page.

Kickoff Follow-Up: Update Your Participant Page + Summer Consult + Student Survey Links

This is a great time to visit your Institute participant page to make some updates. Our IEL team added your initial proposal to your participant page. You should add reflective commentary on your HIP-related course goals and your role as Primary Investigator [PI].

After that, upload the pre-version of your public-facing syllabus. Later, when it's updated, please add the updated version of your public-facing syllabus—we'll set September 10 as an unofficial deadline.

• This summer, please schedule a consult with a member of the ePortfolio team.
