ePortfolio Integration: Course and Curriculum Initiative
Reflecting campus priorities to support equitable access to engaged learning for all IU Indianapolis students, the Institute for Engaged Learning (IEL) will focus the 2025-2026 academic year funding to support ePortfolio integration at the course level. The goal is to increase, improve, and sustain ePortfolios as part of the curricular structure assignments and activities in a course or series of courses. Given this priority, we seek new and veteran faculty dedicated to implementing ePortfolios in new ways or deepening/transforming their ePortfolio-engaged initiatives in credit-bearing experiences. For applications that meet these criteria, the IEL will offer support through additional funding streams, summer/faculty development session, communities of practice [CoP], and online resources.

My ePortfolio Institute Proposal Overview
In H216 Nutrition for First-Year Dental Hygienists, students learn to integrate nutritional concepts into patient care by connecting dietary intake to the oral environment. A central component of the course is a semester-long, project-based experience that would be strengthened through the implementation of an ePortfolio, offering students a meaningful tool they can carry into private practice. Students develop as communicators by conducting patient nutrition interviews that require active listening, rapport-building, and clear, empathetic dialogue. They grow as problem solvers by analyzing dietary data, identifying risks to oral health, and synthesizing findings into actionable recommendations. This process challenges students to think critically and apply knowledge in clinically relevant ways. As innovators, students must design realistic, patient-centered strategies that balance optimal nutritional guidance with achievable behavior change. The ePortfolio would showcase this progression, capturing their ability to reflect, adapt, and present their work in a professional format. Through this approach, communication, problem solving, and innovation are not only practiced but clearly demonstrated, preparing students to support improved oral health outcomes through thoughtful, evidence-based nutritional guidance.
Through the experience with ePortfolios, integrating “Technology” is the NACE Career Readiness Competency that I want to focus on. The foundational principle of what dental hygienists learn in this course is an integral part of patient education throughout their careers. Their ability to learn how to utilize ePortfolios and have this foundational information at their fingertips for their future careers is where I want to focus. This could become a valuable resource for students to carry into private practice, ensuring they are well prepared to educate patients, and analyze the implications of nutritional intake on overall oral health.
