The Institute for Engaged Learning ePortfolio Program awarded 24 ePortfolio Course Integration grants.
$2500
8 IUI Schools
15 IUI Departments
24 Courses
25 Faculty Participants
900+ Students across 2 semesters
Faculty received the grant to integrate ePortfolios into a fall and/or spring course. The grant included funding to support participation in summer workshops, attend fall/spring Community of Practice Zooms, engaged students with pre/post surveys, and document their successes/challenges in concluding reports.
Our IU Indy faculty are doing innovative work with ePortfolios as they modify pedagogical approaches to integrate portfolio development within their courses. Some of this work includes implementing ePortfolios into Gateway/introductory courses, general education writing classes, project-based learning courses, internships, and capstones.
An article written by Yessica Salgado Quintana on this successful grant shared the following, "[a]ccording to pre/post curriculum surveys conducted by the ePortfolio office, students feel that they have been given the opportunity to take control of their assignments, how they're relating to the assignments, resulting in students feel more ownership, support in career development, familiarity and comfort with technology, when they use ePortfolios throughout the semester."
This article highlighted work by Jennifer Bute, Aaron Dusso, and Lynn Jettpace
49% of students participating in our faculty-grant cohort reported that ePortfolios added value to their learning in the course, and 34% affirmed that ePortfolios played somewhat of a role in their success in the course.
One challenge reported by <18% of students was the relevance of the ePortfolio to course content and learning goals; this is an area we can target in future semesters to help students better understand connections between work they share in their ePortfolio in relation to their development of content expertise and career readiness.
Of 167 spring responses, 8 in 10 students verified that ePortfolios enhanced their technology skills; tech skill enrichment was the top benefit reported by respondents. In a close second and third, students responded that ePortfolios gave them more creativity and control of the way they documented and shared their learning.
There was a statistically significant shift in students' self-reported attitudes toward new technology. After completing the ePortfolio course, students identified that they were more likely to seek opportunities to develop technology skills. In addition, there was a nearly 10% shift in students who were ambivalent or resistant to technology—this was a change from the Fall 2024 survey which showed <1% shift in students who reported ambivalence toward technology.
The IU Indianapolis Engaged Learning Showcase is officially the largest open-source repository of student ePortfolios. In May, the Showcase topped 1,000 entries and is itself an example of engaged learning in action.
The SAL/Showcase repository and new data management interface were built by Capstone students in Informatics and Communications. IU students opt-in to the Showcase by sharing hyperlinks to project, degree-oriented, and professional ePortfolios; they can quickly opt-out by unpublishing the link. They can make new entries every semester. Students retain ownership and remain in control of the work they share in the Showcase.
You can search for your students' entries in the Showcase by searching your name. Students share course, faculty, and ePortfolio content information when they share their work through the Submit your ePortfolio form.
*Faculty are also welcome to share their personal, professional, project-oriented, and instructional ePortfolios in the Showcase.
**As of 08/12/2025, Showcase is down due to IU Website Access issues over the summer.
