ePortfolio Integration: Course and Curriculum Initiative
Reflecting campus priorities to support equitable access to engaged learning for all IU Indianapolis students, the Institute for Engaged Learning (IEL) will focus the 2025-2026 academic year funding to support ePortfolio integration at the course level. The goal is to increase, improve, and sustain ePortfolios as part of the curricular structure assignments and activities in a course or series of courses. Given this priority, we seek new and veteran faculty dedicated to implementing ePortfolios in new ways or deepening/transforming their ePortfolio-engaged initiatives in credit-bearing experiences. For applications that meet these criteria, the IEL will offer support through additional funding streams, summer/faculty development session, communities of practice [CoP], and online resources.

"First, using ePortfolio, I aim to foster student power and agency. The ePortfolio provides a space where students can intentionally curate their own artifacts, engage in reflection, and become co-designers of the curriculum rather than passive recipients of knowledge. This approach aligns closely with my teaching philosophy and with Paulo Freire’s emancipatory pedagogy, which positions education as a space for students to “read the word and the world” (Freire & Macedo, 1987). For my multilingual students, the ePortfolio offers a meaningful way to integrate their lived experiences and funds of knowledge, allowing their linguistic resources to be valued as assets rather than deficits. I especially value that the ePortfolio is not simply a digital repository; rather, it supports reflection that deepens students’ identities as learners. Second, through ePortfolio pedagogy, I seek to promote digital literacy in my classroom by engaging students in learning and reflection across multiple modalities, skills that they will need in their academic and professional futures. Finally, the ePortfolio is central to the curricular design of my course. It supports students’ development of written communication and their ability to articulate perspectives and arguments for diverse audiences."
One NACE Career Readiness Competency I aim to integrate into my course is Communication. This competency is essential because students in my course must learn to clearly express their perspectives in writing, a skill that many students struggle to develop. Through different writing activities, students will practice communicating in clear and organized way to different audience. Developing strong communication skills is significant for students’ academic success and future professional careers. By emphasizing written communication in my course, students will gain confidence in articulating arguments, persuading others, and communicating effectively within academic and professional contexts. These skills will help students excel in their chosen fields and prepare them to participate successfully in the workforce.
