This is a space for you to document your ePortfolio Institute experience, from the initial proposal to your final report at the end of your semester integration.
Reflecting campus priorities to support equitable access to engaged learning for all IU Indianapolis students, the Institute for Engaged Learning (IEL) will focus the 2025-2026 academic year funding to support ePortfolio integration at the course level. The goal is to increase, improve, and sustain ePortfolios as part of the curricular structure assignments and activities in a course or series of courses. Given this priority, we seek new and veteran faculty dedicated to implementing ePortfolios in new ways or deepening/transforming their ePortfolio-engaged initiatives in credit-bearing experiences. For applications that meet these criteria, the IEL will offer support through additional funding streams, summer/faculty development session, communities of practice [CoP], and online resources.
In my elementary science methods course, I want ePortfolio learning to help preservice teachers make their design thinking visible as they co-create culturally responsive, inquiry-driven lessons with local elementary-aged learners and build/print 3D models that serve as central learning artifacts. Drawing on the ePortfolio taxonomy, my goals are to: (1) position the ePortfolio as central to course design, so students curate lesson plans, AI-assisted drafts, design iterations, and showcase evidence into a coherent learning story; (2) leverage ePortfolio pedagogies for integrative, self-directed learning and identity development, prompting candidates to connect community funds of knowledge to standards-based inquiry while articulating who they are becoming as equity-centered science teachers; and (3) implement holistic, process-aligned assessment, using reflective evidence to inform instructional decisions (and my course redesign) by tracking growth in culturally responsive practice, inquiry facilitation, and technology integration (AI, 3D printing, and VR).
In my elementary science methods course, I am committed to integrating two NACE career readiness competencies: Technology and Equity + Inclusion. First, Technology: candidates will learn to select, adapt, and leverage AI, 3D printing, and VR ethically to enhance learning not as “add-ons,” but as instructional tools that improve efficiency, support decision-making, and strengthen lesson quality. This matters because graduates are entering classrooms where technological choices shape access, rigor, and student voice; they need practice making principled, classroom-ready decisions under real constraints (time, materials, standards). Second, Equity + Inclusion: the capstone begins with co-creation conversations with elementary students to surface interests, cultural backgrounds, and funds of knowledge, then uses that input to design inquiry experiences anchored in students’ lived realities. This matters because culturally responsive, inquiry-based science requires teachers who can solicit and use multiple perspectives, identify barriers, and design learning that actively expands opportunity, especially when emerging technologies can either widen or disrupt inequities.
